The java compiler's libraries are continuing to resist my attempts to get
themm to build on SunOS, but I have installed the latest version of the gdb
debugger.

The java library may well want working thread support, as well as X
graphics, and may not be very useful without both.

It may want thread support. I've seen no sign that it wants X. Dunno why
it would. So far the battles have been over things like wanting strerror(),
which is within my capacity to cope with.
