Mark, I've narrowed it down to three words, one of which has since been
eliminated (and which I considered the least likely, since I couldn't even
hypothesize an etymology for it), and none of which appear in my three
dictionaries: a small paperback, Webster's New Universal Unabridged, and
'webster', the UN*X program. It has become clear to me that y'all are using
several other dictionaries, more extensive than the ones I have available.
"Xylotic" follows certain rules of English, specifically those of creating
an adjective from a noun: "Of or like wood."

Re 712: I was just grumbling because Kent nearly always picks words which
are in dictionaries that I don't have. It puts me in a bind when I can
guess at what the word is (I had the same guess as you), but can't prove
that it's a word. On the one hand, if it's not a word, it's an illegal
guess. But if it's right, then it's the responsibility of the person who's
"it" to show that it's a word.
So I think you probably made the right choice to go ahead and guess
"xylotic". My strategy in these situations is usually to try to figure out
the letters one by one. But that often doesn't get me the win. :)

Re 717: is any web page that uses a word good for this game? Well...if
this is so, expect me to make up a lot of words, put them in some
quickly written essay on my web site, and point y'all to my web page (I
expect there'd be alot of hollering about that, though). That URL gives
me no clue as to what the word means or if the author was just making up
words.
Re 716: I wasn't under the impression I had to make an exhaustive
search (I looked in several dictionaries, including for related
words). Suffice it to say, xylotic is not the word I'm thinking of.

I think it was made up (as several other associated words were) for
the message at the URL in #717. I would say that that does not make
it a legitimate word for this game.

wasn't the word you were thinking of, not that I was surprised it isn't a
