We could, barely, with some more pledges, get 1,000 2x2 magnets, purple on
white, for $235. I'd have to take masters to Sawicki in Detroit by next
Monday, June 19. I'm not sure this is doable on my schedule.

I'm planning on being at TOP so I probably can help out. I will advise
if things change. I'll een wear my Grex shirt for added effect.

I created a "grexlogo" ID and uploaded the graphics I could find into its
home directory. I cannot remember what is what. cd ~grexlogo and root
around.

American Signs is on the north side of Washtenaw, between MichCon and
K-Mart. I always miss it and have to turn around and go back. Their lawn
signs prices weren't much different from Sawicki's, but American Signs
isn't a union shop.

Fax won't work? I haven't looked at my calendar, but I could probably
make an excuse to drive into Detroit. I'm also willing to make the run
in to pick up the finished product.

I'd hate to send a camera-ready master copy through a fax machine.
*shudder*

Steve Andre' and I talked about this at length this morning. We're going
to see if we can make something happen by Friday.

Is there any discount for a non-profit org?

Re 67. Of course not. Sawicki normally deals with political campaigns,
which are all non-profit.

(They're not charities, though.) I'll pledge $20 toward the magnet project.

Sawicki looks to be ruled out as our magnet supplier. I just talked
to them and they are saying "2-3 weeks" on magnet delivery, and
they could not promise they'd be ready by July 5. (Which is *my*
drop-dead date on this project.) I'm trying to reach American
Signs.

American Signs thinks they can turn around our order in a week.
They are getting back to me with pricing information.

Count me in for $18.

response 73 of 127: Mark Unseen   Jun 16 16:32 UTC 2000

Steve and I visited American Sign this morning. Their price is 75 cents
each for 1000 magnets, which is three times Sawicki's price and far more
than we have money for. So they are out. Steve is going to investigate
maybe a schedule with Sawicki where he would pick the magnets up after
I've left town, and we're going to try to look at other sources.

Impressive Printing in Lansing offers us a price of 34 cents per magnet
for 1,000 2in x 3.5in magnets; that's within what we can afford, only
50% more than Sawicki. Also an $18 setup charge.

base colors: white, red, blue, tan, yellow, green, black, gold, silver
ink colors: black, red, blue, green, white
             (sorry, no purple)
Seven to ten business day turnaround, which is well within our time
frame.

(thanks, kaplan and cmcgee and everyone else who is pledging.)

Just had a chat with TS in party. TS thinks 1000 magnets is way too many
for the TOP project; he thinks we should do 200, 250 tops.
TS works in the promotional materials business, so I have to give his
thoughts some weight here.  I don't want to go below a 500 magnet order;
I want at least 100 left over for consumption by people who are already
Grexers. Thoughts, anyone? Remember that the TOP capacity is
estimated around 1000-1600 people.

Maybe if we went down to a 500 magnet order we could print the Grex
logo in two colors, with the Greek Temple elements in one color and
G R E X in a second color.

----------

pfv came up with a great slogan for future use, especially in a
computer-minded audience:
"Grex: It's Not Your Ordinary Fossil!"

Polygon, in party, pointed out that a two-color run will lengthen our
production time because the ink has to dry. Scratch that idea for
this project.

The total audience for this project should be larger than the 1000-1600
seating capacity of Top of the Park, because there is a substantial
audience turnover during the course of the evening. Lots of people
leave after the music and more people arrive for the movie.

response 78 of 127: Mark Unseen   Jun 16 20:30 UTC 2000

Yes, but lots and lots of people never stop by the booths at all.

krj
response 79 of 127: Mark Unseen   Jun 16 21:42 UTC 2000

The idea would be to have Grexers stationed at the main entrances
to the TOP area -- the ramp from Fletcher Street and maybe the steps by
Power Center and the elevator -- offering the magnets to people
as they pass by. POLITELY offering them. We would want
Grexers to do this from before the band starts playing, until
the movie starts.

We'd want a stack of magnets available at the TOP info booth, but
I'd regard this as secondary. Probably have a promotional paper flyer
about Grex at the booth, too.

Progress report: yes, progress continues! STeve is doing pixel cleanup
on a copy of the Greek Temple logo to make it look good and sharp as
a monotone image. I've seen this work in progress, and it is very nice
and will leave us with a standard copy of the logo we can use in
future promotional efforts.

Steve also talked to our Designated Magnet Manufacturer, Impressive
Printing in Lansing, and they are comfortable with our schedule.
We expect to take in the order on Tuesday afternoon.

Thanks!
