magnet idea is still quite speculative. What should be on the flyers?

I like frisbees. Greek logo in the center and cyberspace.org around the
logo. No one throws frisbees away. Just my 2 cents.
There is a diner that gives all thier kids meals in frisbees. It has
a logo and a slogan that says "Have a Diner Day" along with thier URL.

Frizbees or fridge magnets sound great to me. Can someone save one and
send it to me please?

I'd think twice about giving away promotional frisbees (or "flying discs",
as they're supposed to be called, lest we invoke the wrath of the trademark
holder..)
I remember the ACM SIGGRAPH '87 conference in Atlanta. "Flying discs"
were one of the fashionable promotional trinkets that year, and several
of the companies who were exhibiting at the show were giving them away.
Several also had hospitality suites at the fancy hotel nearest the
convention center, which happened to be the Marriott Marquis. The dominant
architectural feature of the Marriott Marquis is a large central atrium
which rises all the way to the top of the hotel -- more than ten stories
I think.. You can imagine that the hotel management was not happy with
companies that served wine and beer to their guests and then turned the
slightly tipsy computer programmers out into the hundred-foot-high atrium
with a plentiful supply of cheap promotional frisbees. More than a few
plummetted to the lobby, seemingly at or near terminal frisbee velocity,
and a big stink was made as buzz-killing hotel employees were instructed
to seize any frisbees spotted from the computer geeks, who naturally
became indignant..
Anyways, my point is that frisbees aren't necessarily the best thing to
distribute at a high-spirited, high-density gathering like Top of the Park.
It's substantially harder to commit accidental mayhem with a refrigerator
magnet, and they're probably a lot more affordable, too.. Put me down for
$20 if the magnet plan ever gets to the production stage.

I think the magnet plan can be considered a hallucination unless someone
appears to implement it.
I am not volunteering, but I'll donate $20 if I can have one of the
magnets.

I will raise my pledge to $100; this brings us to $160. I was talking with
hhsrat in party, and we may decide to work together to try to pull this off.
janc: if I'm the coordinator on this, I will be sure that everyone who
kicks in money gets a couple of magnets off the top of the pile.
Joe Gelinas in resp:11 :: who & where are American Signs? I'm familiar
with Sawicki and Sons.
other: what is the approximate capacity of Top of the Park? And, will
TOP management be OK with us handing out magnets?
Finally, will there be 2-3 volunteers to be sure the magnets are actually
distributed at TOP on July 9? I cannot be there that night. Two years ago,
the bank magnets I mentioned in resp:0 were being handed out at the top of
the main entrance ramp from Fletcher Street.

Capacity is around 1000 (actually, I think about 1600 chairs were delivered
today, so maybe more).
There is no problem with sponsoring organizations handing out materials which
promote themselves, especially if they are non-profit. (This is not a
statement of official policy, BTW.)

Polygon sent me some information about Sawicki magnet prices.
They are higher; I think two-color is right out. Also their normal flow-time
is two weeks, and we are now pushing that. I would have to pick up the
magnets from Sawicki no later than July 3.
Polygon wrote: -------
Three sizes: 2x2, 1x3, and 2x3.5 (inches). All
magnets are bordered in white -- chose any standard imprint color.

We could, barely, with some more pledges, get 1,000 2x2 magnets, purple on
white, for $235. I'd have to take masters to Sawicki in Detroit by next
Monday, June 19. I'm not sure this is doable on my schedule.

American Signs is on the north side of Washtenaw, between MichCon and
K-Mart. I always miss it and have to turn around and go back. Their lawn
signs prices weren't much different from Sawicki's, but American Signs
isn't a union shop.
Fax won't work? I haven't looked at my calendar, but I could probably
make an excuse to drive into Detroit. I'm also willing to make the run
in to pick up the finished product.

to see if we can make something happen by Friday.

which are all non-profit.

Sawicki looks to be ruled out as our magnet supplier. I just talked
to them and they are saying "2-3 weeks" on magnet delivery, and
they could not promise they'd be ready by July 5. (Which is *my*
drop-dead date on this project.) I'm trying to reach American
Signs.

Steve and I visited American Sign this morning. Their price is 75 cents
each for 1000 magnets, which is three times Sawicki's price and far more
than we have money for. So they are out. Steve is going to investigate
maybe a schedule with Sawicki where he would pick the magnets up after
I've left town, and we're going to try to look at other sources.

Impressive Printing in Lansing offers us a price of 34 cents per magnet
for 1,000 2in x 3.5in magnets; that's within what we can afford, only
50% more than Sawicki. Also an $18 setup charge.
base colors: white, red, blue, tan, yellow, green, black, gold, silver
ink colors: black, red, blue, green, white
(sorry, no purple)
Seven to ten business day turnaround, which is well within our time
frame.

(thanks, kaplan and cmcgee and everyone else who is pledging.)
Just had a chat with TS in party. TS thinks 1000 magnets is way too many
for the TOP project; he thinks we should do 200, 250 tops.
TS works in the promotional materials business, so I have to give his
thoughts some weight here. I don't want to go below a 500 magnet order;
I want at least 100 left over for consumption by people who are already
Grexers. Thoughts, anyone? Remember that the TOP capacity is
estimated around 1000-1600 people.
Maybe if we went down to a 500 magnet order we could print the Grex
logo in two colors, with the Greek Temple elements in one color and
G R E X in a second color.
----------
pfv came up with a great slogan for future use, especially in a
computer-minded audience:
"Grex: It's Not Your Ordinary Fossil!"
