Everyone will know when we're mobing, because Grex will be shut down
during that time period. I'm hoping for only 4 hours or so, but that
will mutate into an entire day if the phone don't transfer over easily.

I think we should just declare Grex down for two days and tell everyone
to go out and enjoy the fall leaves.

Way, way back there somebody said that the 3000 number would be the first on
the hunt list.
What does that do to us technology poor non-techies who are reaching grex on
<gasp> antique equipment? Precisely: one MacPlus and one 1200 baud modem.
Does this mean that the 1200 baud parts of Grex will be busy most of the time
'cause they are the *first* ones that get connected?

Nope, 3000 is currently at the front of the list, so nothing will
change. Grex's faster modems can also answer at lower speeds, so
by dialing 761-3000, you'll get access to any free modem. People
who dial 761-5041 skip the 2400baud-only lines, so they have more
chance of getting a busy signal. Even when Grex upgrades its modems
so they all answer at higher speeds, your 1200 baud modem should
work be able to connect with every line.

Less techie explanation... 761-3000 is "first", out of a group of lines that
ring the next line if they are busy. So if the first four lines are busy,
dialing 3000 will connect you to the fifth modem.

Catriona, we'll e supporting 1200bps for the forseeable future.
Right now, all the good modei I know of do this, but that will not
be true forever. At some point 1200bps connections won't be supported
by newer modei, and you'll have to get a newer modem. The good news
is that 14.4Kbps modei are available for $60 or so.
I will vnture to saythat Grex will support 1200bps for three years
more, at least.
I went by the pumpkin to see the artwork on the wall. It's
neat, but we'll have to offer covering it up with new paint when
we leave. TA/Kami, yu need to finish the painting ASAP, like
this weekend if at all possible. There are shelves that should
be installed on the wall where the butterfly is; Mr. butterfly
himself needs to move to a different wall, as the phone patch
panel needs to go there.

The butterfly was Popcorn's masterpeice. I'll try and come in Monday (lack
of key...) and finish what I can do. Anyone who's over there is *most*
welcome to pick up a brush themselves and go to town. Art by concensus...

I just got off the phone, talking with out account rep about our
moving date. The final word is that are moving Monday, October 21st.
He tried getting us moved earlier, but to no avail.
It will be tight, moving on Monday like that, but I think we can do it.

We should contact the city, telling them our move date, and the reason for
delay.

If we get one days more delay, which with Ameritech is certainly possible,
we will still be there. Unless we decide to move on Monday even if Ameritech
isn't ready. If there is some delay, I'd much rather not be giving the city
a panic call on the morning of the 22nd. I'd rather tell them in advance that
due to Ameritech's delays we are being force to cut things close.

If we get another delay I will personally esclate things to
the level of the president of Ameritech in Chicago.
The people in Ameritech know how irratated I am with them
in general. Thats one of the reasons why we got the good account
rep (Ken)--to lessen our complaints about them. Ken knows that
I will go through the roof if they screw up again.
But sure, someone go ahead and call the city. It won't do any
harm, but I think I'd prefer to leave on the 22nd no matter what.

I am sure that their knowledge of your irritation is a good thing, but
do guard against going ballistic. Excessive ranting will probably
decrease the level of cooperation you can get from them.
I agree with Jan that it would be prudent to call the city to announce
our concern about the scheduling delays over which we have no real
control.

I won't go ballistic, I promise. I'll go caustic. But slightly more
seriously, Ameritech does know that we've been pushed up against a rather
uncomfortable wall here. So I do actaully sort of trust that they're
going to do the work on Monday. Unforunately I have *no* faith that it
will be done correctly. The good news about the pushed back install
date is that being on a Monday now, there is no chance that we'll be
screwed by waiting over a weekend for the right people to fix things.
Thats actually a good thing, so I"m not too upset about all this.

We need to get a phone cable. It should be maybe not much less than 25 feet
long and something like a 25-pair cable would be nice. My brother suggested
that I could try Weidmayers and Purchase. (I'll call them tomorrow, if I can
find a phone number for Weidmayer, which doesn't seem to be in my phone book.)
Likely, he though, such a cable would be pretty expensive, and that many
conductors hard to find. Maybe several parallel thinner cables? He thought
we might be able to get the phone company to give us one from scrap.
I don't think we could canniblize the old cables very well. They don't look
quite long enough.
Anyone have any better ideas about where to find this? I really know
nothing about this stuff.

to do with a phone connection.

This is kinda doubtful, but I was just reading in the AA Observer
that Recycle Ann Arbor recently opened a reuse store next to their
recycling facility on South Industrial. They sell all sorts of stuff
cheaply; slightly used cans of house paint are even free! 25-pair
phone cable sounds a little too obscure, but you never know. (Rob,
it would have 25 pairs of wire, with each phone line taking up one
pair of wires).
If someone takes a picture of the Pumpkin, I'll scan it for the
web site. I'm sure I'm not the only one curious to see it :-).

I saw the room for the first time last night. That is indeed a neat paint
job.
I'm not sure how interested we woudl be in in an old cable of unknown origin,
given the problems that line noise can cause for us. I'd prefer to go with
a new cable, which we can probably assume is good.
RohH -- each phone line needs a pair of wires, which are generally twisted
to avoid inductive coupling problems (and thus called twisted pair). A 25
pair cable has 25 wire pairs in it, and can hold 25 phone lines.

that 50pr cable is probably the newest wiring in the building. in addition
to that, it *is* new wire. i just didn'thave enough access to find the
otehr end - it wasn't wehre it was supposed to be.
