Well, offscum is undoubtable the right answer, but unfortunately Joe went
twice in a row, which is against the rules. What to do, what to do...

Er, undoubtedly. Well, I guess if Kent scores Kevin's guess first, then
Joe can be the winner.

Ding! I'm calling gelinas the winner, based on the past practice of
switching the order of responses in such cases. I don't recall if the
situation ever came up with a winning guess, though. Any road...
Joe, it's your turn.
offscum o.fskm, . Also 6 offscome, ofscombe, 7 off-scumme, of-scum(me.
[f. off- 3 + scum. ] That which is skimmed off; scum, dross, refuse;
fig. that which is rejected as vile or worthless (usually of persons, in
collective sing. or pl.; formerly also of one person).

By the rules, Joe's offering was illegal, so you just wait for a
legitimate offering of the word. This, of course, leads to a
scramble at that point, but that's part of the game. Reording the
guesses to give the point to someone that didn't follow the rules
weakens the rules. This has happened before, by the way, and if I
recall correctly, someone new that was lurking got the point.

argh. I *thought* someone else had gone between my offerings, so I spoke
up. I'm (half) sorry I missed that I had given the last answer. Note that
this situation arose in another of the contests in just the past week or so,
so I was sensitised. And still blew it. But it's just as well: I'm out
of town and had told my hostess that I _probably_ would not be bringing
my laptop. She was obviously disappointed when it reared its head this
evening, so I'm not likely to be online with any regularity before Sunday.
So I will lose my opportunity and learn my lesson.
