"Peoples" doesn't bother me, since it has a legitimate use. "Persons," on
the other hand, always makes me twitch.

re #46: Arlo is busy with plans to build a "next generation" computer for Grex
out of Duplo.

Not a wise idea. Those spinning parts tend to get stuck.

I'm Backtalked in right now, because dial-ins don't seem to be working....It'll
connect me, give me the welcome line, and then hangup.

Darn modems were working, but Grex itself wouldn't talk to them most of
the afternoon. Couldn't telnet in either.

81 attempts have been made to infect Grex with the Code Red Virus since the
first of the month. So far, not even one of them has found us to be running
Microsoft IIS.

Thanks for taking your Sunday morning and doing a Grex backup, Scott.
(At least I think it was Scott.)

It was. Actually it's pretty easy with the new tape drive: Drop by early
to run a fsck (filesystem check) and then start the backup, then when Grex
reappears on the net drop by again to harvest the tape.

I'd like to announce that one of Grex's first modems is item 81 in the
auction conference. This is your chance to own a peice of Grex history.

I have turned off the 'layers' program on Grex. It is used with the MacLayers
terminal emulator to let Mac users see multiple windows when they have a
single connection to Grex. I turned it off because it has some security
holes. I could probably fix the security hole without any great difficulty,
but I'm wondering if anyone knows anyone who uses this. If not, it's probably
better to just leave it turned off.

I used it for a bit and it was cool/neat/boss/23skidoo/etc, but it
did not provide me without any particular function useful to me, so
I ended up not using it.

I used to use it when first on Grex, but have not even had a copy of it
on my last three computers.

Here is a reposting with more information for today:
September 16, 2001:
My dad, Henry T. Ryan, passed away just past midnight on
Thursday, September 13, 2001 from a massive heart attack. He had
been taken from his and my mom's apartment in Westland, Michigan
to Garden City Hostipal near 11pm on Wednesday. The head nurse
reported to us that he had been restored to a heart beat about
four times, but despite valiant efforts, he expired at 12:28am.
He is survived by his wife (my mom) Patrica Ann, and
eight children: Mike, Tim, Kathleen, Mark, Karen, Terri Jo,
Renee and Rochelle; and eight grandchildren from Mike, Kathleen
and Mark. All us Ryan siblings will be in Michigan this weekend
to celebrate his life, comfort each other and our mom.
Others sharing in our sorrow include family freind, Ann,
mom's brother Tom, Mark's wife Jackie, Renee's husband Steve,
Rochelle's husband Rich and Karen's husband Richard. Mike's
wife Elaine shares her sorrow from home in Wisconsin.
Hank Ryan was 60 days away from celebrating his 80th
birthday. He had suffered previously from heart attacks and
was under his doctor's care for other heart disease.
Visitation will be at the Village Chapel, in Fowlerville,
Michigan, at 2nd and Church on Sunday, the 16th from 10am to 5pm.
A funeral mass will occur on Monday, September 17, 2001 at St.
Martha's Catholic Church in Dearborn, Michigan. Veiwing will occur
an hour before the mass. St. Martha's is on Oakwood, across
the street from Oakwood hospital, between the Southfield freeway
and Rotunda. We will honor Henry's wish for cremation.
Henry T. Ryan is a veteran of World War II and a long-
time employee of Michigan Bell Telephone Company, taking an
eary retirement, when offered nearly 20 years ago as they where
becoming Ameritech. He continued to do part-time telephone work
with his friend, Jim, until this year.

My personal wish is that instead of sending flowers, make
a donation to St. Martha's church of Dearborn, Michigan. My dad
helped clear the land that church was built on in the 1950's and
contributed his labor to it's building. He and my mom have
continued to attend mass there, even after moving from their home
in Dearborn in 1998.
I have found out today (9/14) that my dad's favorite
charity is the Capicion Soup Kitchen of Detroit. I would also
suggest that as an alternative to sending flowers.

        You may sent cards to
Tim Ryan
3175 Baylis
Ann Arbor, MI 48108 and they will be shared with the rest of my
family. I can be reached at (734) 973-9753.

Thank for reading this and sharing in my greiving.
-Tim Ryan

Installed tcl version 8.3.3 on Grex. Tcl is a scripting language that has
been getting pretty popular in recent years.

wrote a book on it.

Clif has never been on Grex as far as I know, and probably
not on M-Net for at least ten years. In the mid-1980's he
was pretty active there, and even participated in the
legendary M-Net Bicycle Touring Society.

I've upgraded Grex's Gnu C and C++ compilers to version 2.95.3 (note that the
newer 3.0.x releases do not work on SunOS yet). I've also installed the Gnu
Fortran 77 compiler (g77) and CHILL compiler (chill). Objective C is also
supported by the new gcc. The Gnu Java compiler (gcj) is installed but won't
work until I get it's libraries built. I'm not totally sure that will work.
