They haven't posted statements. I forgot to remind them that they
could provide statements until yesterday. I expect that at least
some of the candidates will post statements soon.

Bill, you're repeating yourself. You're repeating yourself.

Oops. Sorry. I edited it to add something, then edited again
to change it. I thought I purged and retyped, but apparently
only retyped.

At his point, one candidate has put up a statement.

My impression is that the way you get compressed data onto the drive is with
something like "tar -cvz". That is, the compression is done in the tape
backup software on the server, not on the drive.

response 58 of 94: Mark Unseen   Dec 6 13:57 UTC 2000

I'd hope the manual would say, if the tape drive does not support compression
internally. But I have no experience with these drives.

Tape compression is done by logic inside the tape drive. The
compression is generally not as efficient as what gzip or bzip2 could
do; probably the tradeoff is for higher speed & better error recovery.
With gzip, if you lose a data block in the middle of the file there is
no easy way to recover whatever was after that.

that's why I like afio. Clean compression by file, rather than block.

Grex has credit cards again. It's PayPal, so it's crippled and half-assed,
but it is actually possible to give Grex money with a credit card now.
See coop:209 for details.

Only three days remain to vote in the Grex board of directors
election. The polls close at midnight (EST), December 15.
Via telnet or direct-dial, type vote at a Unix shell prompt
or !vote at most other prompts. From the web, go to the
page http://cyberspace.org/cgi-bin/pw/voting-booth .

All four candidates have now posted campaign statements. So
even if you've already voted, you might want to re-visit the
voting booth if you haven't seen all of their statements.
You can always re-vote; your latest vote replaces any
previous one.

(Carson, you probably know this, but others might not: You can replace
your own previous vote, not someone else's previous vote.)

Today, Friday Dec. 15, is the LAST DAY TO VOTE in the Grex Board of
Directors elections. The polls close at midnight EST. If you're
connected by telnet or dialup, type !vote or vote to enter the
voting booth. From the web, http://cyberspace.org/cgi-bin/pw/voting-booth

Is grex using the butterfly ballot?
remmers
response 74 of 94: Mark Unseen   Dec 16 21:36 UTC 2000

Grex is using an electron-based ballot.

Speaking of which, here are the election results:

        aruba 35
        steve 29
        mooncat 26
        jiffer 19

So Mark Conger, STeve Andre, and Anne Perry have been elected to
two-year terms. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to
everyone who participated in the election process.
