Grex seemingly crashed today at 8:49am due to a internal resource that
was exhusted, and left the system in a brain dead state. I think we've
seen this or a similar error before back on te Sun-3's. We'd been up for
15 days, which was proably enough time for such a problem to arise. We'll
look into this more.

This is the first such period of downtime we've had in a *long* time.
Had I know about this this morning, I'd have fixed it on the way in to work;
I drove right by Grex. Oh Well.

Oh my, /vmunix is the Unix kernel. Kinda puts a crimp in things if it's
not there. Dunno what happened to it, but it seems to exist now.

The monthly Grex Board of Directors meeting is this Tuesday, April 27,
6:30-9:00pm at Zingerman's Next Door, 422 Detroit Street, Ann Arbor. The
public is invited. See Item 90 in Coop (item:coop,90) for the agenda.

/vmunix is a symlink to the kernel. For some reason, it wasn't there. STeve
put it back.

Hmm. It seems to be a hard link, not a symlink, at this point:

Grex is now running on a real UPS (uninterruptable power
supply) instead of the old power conditioner. This means that
in the event of a momentary power outage the UPS will power
Grex, for up to three minutes or so. We're still in the process
of determining how much life we'll have with the batteries,
but even with three minutes of coverage, we have excellent
protection against weird power outages from thunderstorms
now.

A Michigan legislature has passed a bill, scheduled to go into effect
August 1, provides criminal penalties for making available to minors
material which is "harmful" to them. It is in many respects similar to
the Communications Decency Act that was struck down as unconstitutional
by the Supreme Court. If the law goes into effect, it could according to
the ACLU significantly impact Grex's operation as an open, free-speech
forum.

The ACLU is in the process of mounting a court challange to this law to
prevent it from going into effect, and is asking Grex to be a plaintiff
in the suit. This issue is currently under discussion in Coop
Conference. The text of the bill is posted there. Two ACLU attorneys are
participating in the item and responding to questions from users about
the law and the implications of any participation by Grex in the suit. I
urge everyone to have a look at the discussion. It's in Coop item 98
(item:coop,98).

Here's an odd request:

Grex is looking for a small 120v-240v transformer. It only needs to
supply 3 watts, to drive the power meter I'm working on for Grex.

One easy possibility would be a small or medium transformer with both
120v and 240v taps on the primary, so it could be used as an
autotransformer. Secondary voltage unimportant.

Anybody willing to donate such an item, or sell it cheaply? Check your
junk boxes, electronics geeks!

I can't really see how that would work. You'd need at least two identical
ones, wouldn't you?

There will be a special meeting of Grex's Board of Directors on Monday, June
7th at 7:30 PM in the Kids Room at Zingerman's Next Door. The meeting is to
discuss whether Grex should join the suit being brought by the ACLU against
the proposed Michigan law on Internet censorship. Michael Steinberg, lawyer
for the Michigan ACLU, will be there.

The meeting is open to the public. If you have a strong opinion on whether
Grex should join the suit, I encourage you to attend and express it.

I have one you can have. It is a 120/240 VAC wall-wart, with outputs
of 1.5 to 12 V DC. It's only problem is that the 120/240 V selection
switch is bad, but the xformer in it is OK.

Grex is now running all its power through a power meter, so we can more
accurately know how much to pay for electricity each month. Thanks to
jdeigert and rcurl for donating the parts to make it possible!
