Humm. Just noticed that the 9671 modem seems to connect at 2400 baud...

...which is the expected thing for it to do, since we only have 2400 baud
lines into Grex for most of our modem pool.

as an added plus it seems to be much better about matching speeds with
my modem (or rather, my modem seems to be much better at matching speeds
with this one, since I suspect the problems are on my side.. Anyways, no
gibberish followed by frantic sending of breaks, etc..)

I'm on it now. Seems to hammer out the letters rather than pour them
smoothly. but otherwise, works ok. Does seem slower than usual, though not
by much (I usually log in at 38.4).

re #54: to 761-3000.. I don't believe I know what 761-5041 is.
I've been out of the loop for four or five years, I'm sure there've
been some changes I could stand to know about.

Could "Grex's talkd program is temporarily turned off." be expanded upon
a bit to say something like:
Grex's talkd program was turned off <date> because <reason>.
It will be turned back on <condition(s)>.
? "temporarily" has no meaning given how long that statement has been
in the motd.

Re #55: 761-5041 is the entry point in the trunk hunt to the
fast error-correcting modems. Well, not hugely fast by modern
standards -- they're set at 9600 baud -- but better than 2400
and tend to connect to things more smoothly.
Type !phones for a listing of the trunk hunt.

Actually, ttyh3 is still in the hunt group, one one of the lines that was
unused before. The current entry point to the fast modems is 761-4931.
Is anybody actually talking to Ameritech about the dead phone line? This is
getting rediculous.

Ameritech can't even provide my house with consistent dial-tone service --
often I'll pick up the phone during the day and get no tone. Hang up,
wait 10-15 minutes and then things are working again.. sigh..
Thanks for the pointers about 761-5041, it does indeed make a difference
and my connects are much improved.

That is alright (well it isn't but....) Chaz, Jenn and I ordered an additional
phone line be put in the apartment..(three people, two of them women....VERY
necessary). They were supposed to do this and be done with it on the 11th,
and were supposed to call us and let us know when it was done. After hearing
nothing for a week, Chaz finally called up Ameritech to find out what was
going on.
They said that it was all set up and working, and that they had just forgotten
to call. Well, apparently, they also forgot to test the line. After spending
the better part of an hour trying to wire the apartment to get the second
line, Chaz has determined that they must have connected that "pair of phone
lines" to somebody else's apartment, cuz it sure does not come into ours.
Ameriwreck strikes again!!

Many days at work, I spend more than half my time dealing with Ameritech, and
I'm not the only one therewho does that. We could probably assign dealing
with Ameritech to somebody as a full time job. The latest thing they did was
to install a leased line we ordered for a customer into the wrong building.
Recently Ameritech has been running radio commercials advertising that "with
Ameritech, there are no surprises." That's mostly true, but not quite.
Occasionally they do get something done right.

Second lines are a gift from god... Our modem is in almost constant use at
our house, there's heavy demand from three people... We could really use a
third line

We got service instead of excuses on our ISDN line at work only after we
called the state Public Service Commission to complain. We'd been told that
Ameritech doesn't really care who else suffers, complains, etc., but the
Public Service Commission folks make many of the rules that Ameritech has
to live by, so Ameritech actually pays attention to heat from that direction.
Our source on this information? A salesman for Ameritech.

I have two pesky teenagers. Maybe I could try acutioning them off on a short
term basis (until they have finished knowing everything). ;-)
