It isn't; news.umich.edu is just an alias for news.itd.umich.edu, and I hadn't
realised that the alias had been created.
Some of the umich groups are moderated, others may not be very busy right now,
since we are more or less between terms. (I think; I've really no idea when
classes next start.)

Reminds me of that item several years ago that was in a cypher. Is this
another cypher, all you code-breakers out there?

requires registration.

What might my sleeve have accidentally hit in the lower right part of the
keyboard to make my screen (on grex, dialed in) tell me
Press h for further instructions (inverse)
OK
and then refuse to do anything else even after pressing h?

Next problem - we are attempting without too much success to teach a friend
to download images from her grex email and view them offline. Finally I wrote
a batch file to move any downloaded images from kermit to an images directory
and display them all with lxpic (which lets her delete what she does not want)
but is there any way to automate getting the attachments from her email (via
pine) to her home directory, as she is getting confused about V S E Q Y.
Kermit would also be a lot easier if it worked properly and did not crash when
you downloaded without the robust setting (but maybe the new modems will fix
that). Can this process be automated using MAIL instead of PINE?
I tried teaching her yahoo webmail but that is hopeless as she is not used
to graphical browsers and cannot find the attachment or maybe even the mail.
(The idea was to forward to a yahoo account. We got past the login and
password problem but then it gets bewildering).

Last I heard Grex doesn't allow, or doesn't want, graphics files in
accounts - space hogs.

But her friends keep forwarding mails to her full of little images of angels,
2-4K. The graphics file ban is on webpages, not on what email you can
receive. She has about 200K total email stored at any time, max. An angel
takes up way less space than a typical worm.

How many angels CAN fit on the (read/write) head of a disk?

It depends on what substance angels on a disk have.

I just learned how to make a very short list of people I am not accepting
telegrams or chat requests from. Type change (!change?) and follow the
instructions for exceptions, under write permissions.

That's amazing! (Especially if you consider how many times that very
information has been posted in recent Agoras.)

I thought it would be helpful for other less experienced users to know today
since one grexer is making a major nuisance of him/her self sending telegrams.
This item was intended for new users, not for sarcasm.

We shouldn't assume that all new users are refugees (or attempted invaders)
from M-Net.

Greetings and salutations for this weekend. I am looking for some sort of text
for individuals that are new to telnet. I have used the various helps commands
and so forth. However, I am trying to find a way to learn more about the
numerous commands associated with telnet, etc. I am also looking for a good
online source of tutorials etc. Thank you.

There's not much to it.
telnet <site name or ip address>
Any features above and beyond that depend on your client program. If
you're telnetting from a UNIX host, try a "man telnet".

Telnet clients I've used allow you to specify the port#, too. This can be
useful in debugging problems with (say) pop3 or something, but isn't likely
to be helpful for beginners.

(I suspect M. Patterson is actually asking about the operating system on the
machine he has telnetted to.)
