That's the object of having more users with their help flags up - it
dilutes the interruptions. I've also had write-helps while I was
helping - what do others do about that? I've started to ask the
person I'm helping to stand by, and then suspend to ask the second
helpee to hold on, if they can...but you don't know how long you'll
be with the first helpee. Could it be set up so your flag goes off while
you are connected to a helpee?

The problem being, we don't just want *anybody* to turn their flags
on, we want them to be people who actually know something about
using Grex. I don't think we could do much more to piss off our
new users than:

"How do I read my old mail?"
"Uh, I dunno."
"Well, how do I create a Web page here?"
"What's a Web page?"
"Can I send mail to someone asking for help?"
"I'm not sure..."
"So what do you know, anyway?"
"Well, I know how to use party..."

I would love to help out....but there are some things about unix i do not
know.
Are there some books or something I could read to learn more..I know most of
the basics. I have just now started down loading my mail...but even then
something is wrong..I would like to learn this stuff..if only for myself.

Learning is good. There are so damn many books out these days
about Unix and the Internet, I'm sure at least a few of them
are good, right? >8) I don't have any specific recommendations,
the only Unix book I own has been out of print for years.
Anyone else?

mysteries of the unknown world of grex and unix are becoming...well becoming
even more fuzzier

Well, Rob, I think I've asked you enough questions to know what I'm doing (and
I mostly ask complicated questions). Would you mind terribly if I lend a
helping hand. I do know the answers to all of the questions listed in #54.

If you know what you're doing I think I can guarantee that Rob will be
not just willing but tickled pink. I don't think you need his permission,
though.

(In any case, davel is right - you don't need my permission to
turn your help flag on.)

Thanks for backing me up, Rob. <sighs in relief>
8-{)}

What Rob was saying, way back there, is that we've occasionally seen really
clueless people wanting to have their helper flags on. Two reasons seem
to come up: they perceive this as somehow giving them status, or they
somehow think this will give them root access or something like that.
(Either misapprehension is just further evidence that they're truly
clueless, of course.) If you can in fact answer questions like those he
posted in that ironic comment, and are willing to be interrupted in whatever
you're doing by people needing help, then PLEASE go ahead & turn on your
helper flag without bothering to ask for permission. OK?

I've had my helper flag on for the past day or to. I'm sorry for being
sarcastic... but, mind you, it was just sarcaism. I'm really not *that* stupid
and ignorant, honest :)

So, why did you just write help, and then EOF before I could respond? 8^}
rlawson
response 68 of 126: Mark Unseen   Nov 25 23:39 UTC 1995

Because I was helping someone at the time and when I was finished helping,
the person would not send an EOF... they just sat there. I was going to ask
you how to deal with it but just as I typed "write help" (no quotes, of course
<smile>), they sent the EOF. Sorry for the confussion. :) I was about to write
back to you and explain why I had just written to you and sent an EOF two
seconds later, but was too em-bare-assed (I just hate it when that happens).

I wait a decent interval, and then I quickly write "Use ctrl-D to quit"
(many newusers don't know what to do). That usually works.

That's what I did, but when I ran a "w violentj", it said he'd been idle for
about 4 minutes. :( <robert just doesn't know (robert shakes head slowly)>

One good feature to know:

In "chat", if you start a line with a ) character, it will not send anything
you type until you hit return (for that line only).

So, if the person is slow exiting, I type

)control-D to exit

so that if he starts typing, he doesn't see my texted mixed with his, since
that line will be sent all in a burst when I hit return.

I also use it to escape the ! characater at the begining of a line, like
"Type the command
)!chmod 600 file
robh
response 72 of 126: Mark Unseen   Nov 26 01:10 UTC 1995

I just stick a tab in front of any ! commands I include.

response 73 of 126: Mark Unseen   Nov 26 06:22 UTC 1995

Thanks for that trick, Jan. Up to now I wait for a while..and then
type very fast! Say, how would I kill that line, if the person did
start another question?

response 74 of 126: Mark Unseen   Nov 26 21:26 UTC 1995

Re #71: Does that work in "write"? What is the differnce between "chat" and
"write"? Or are they the same? (I've always thought it was the latter)
