Pepper has never really eaten anything except for dry food. When this
was first diagnosed, the vet prescribed some ultra-rich wet food, and
while he will eat a couple of spoonsful, he doesn't appear to really
like it. When I got the chewy treats the other night, I bought some
different flavours of "Fancy Feast" and he really dug into the chicken
flavour last night. So, yay, Pepper. :)

Excellent! Good going Pepper!!

Another Zimmer comment... there was a cat there (currently being
fostered) who really preferred dry food to wet, but given his health
they wanted to restrict him to wet food. Anyhow, long story short- in
small amounts they would give him the dry food- except they would add
water to it so that it was softer. Dunno if this would work for Pepper,
or if it's something his vet would recommend, but it might be worth a
try.

Another excellent suggestion, mooncat. Thanks; I'll try that.

Soo.... What news??

sadly, none of it's good news. Pepper is currently in the hospital,
getting aggressive IV treatment. I don't feel sane enough to explain
everything that's happened in the past 20 days, but I'll just say it
was a very slow improvement in his appetite, which doesn't appear to
have been enough. It appears, from a 2nd veterinary opinion, that there
was a pretty severe primary condition (hyperthyroidism) which my
regular vet had never thought to diagnose --- we're still waiting on
the blood work for that confirmation.

In the meantime, he's a very sick cat, and the vet isn't being too
optimistic. I'm bringing him home tomorrow morning, after 48 hours on
IV.

The entire issue of his pain and quality of life is definitely being
discussed, and I'm trying to remain rational about that ... I hope
people won't, however helpfully, remind me of this sad fact, in this
forum. I know he's a fighter, and I want to give him every chance to
recover from this, but it gets to a point where that desire to keep him
alive begins to seem selfish, and his suffering is too difficult to
see. I would love to have him at home, if it does come to that. The
general consensus is that we're not quite there, yet.

I feel terribly broken-hearted to report this....

We ended Pepper's suffering today, around 4:45 CDT. He went peacefully,
stretched out on the couch with me, my roommate (his other daddy) and
purring as he always had done.

Thank you all for the support and information you've shared with me in
this item.

I just realised that although I've been very good about thanking folks
that have shown support IRL, I hadn't yet done so here. All of your
responses, in this item since its beginning and in other places around
grex, have helped me tremendously with this. Thank you all. Grex can
sometimes be a difficult place for me to hang out, but it's instances
like this that remind me of the value of its potential collective
heart. For these reasons, I'm making a small donation to Grex this
month, as a thank you, and in Pepper's honor.

It's still very hard to deal with the loss, but definitely the good
memories are beginning to eclipse the bad ones.

I'm very upset that now this conference has glaring empty holes in the
discussion. I suppose I'll learn to deal, but I'll never understand why.

Thought it's been several months, micklpkl, I'm sorry to read about
Pepper.

Ric (Ricochet - Bombay, American Shorthair mix) saw the v. e. t.
yesterday for an ear/ur infection. He'll be fine, once he stops hating
me for eardrops, eyedrops, and pills.
The good thing is that the vet was very pleased with his weight (13.5
lbs, but he's so cobby that he *looks* fat) and his general health. She
said that if she hadn't read his chart first, her exam would have lead
her to believe he was around seven years old. Yay! He'll be twelve in
September.
