I don't think that would be legal, Sindi. My understanding is that the
contract generally specifies that the account is specifically and only for
the use of the signature's business.

(Grex has to pay to deposit checks because Grex has to use a business account,
rather than a personal account)

When making the final decision to go forward or not, don't forget to include
the volunteers to cover startup and initial months' fees.

Would it be possible to negotiate lower fees based upon our status as a small
nonprofit?

That's an excellent question.

It seems unlikely but it's certainly worth asking...

I didn't see any mention of discounts for non-profit organizations. If you want
to take a look at the web site for the company through which I got my merchant
credit card account, go to:

I have been alterted to an alternative, or rather an adjunct, to credit
cards. This is monthly automatic withdrawal from bank accounts and credit card
accounts. A description of how this was set up and how it works for one
non-profit organization is in my file autocash . One can have one's dues,
or donations, made monthly and automatically. I did not try to understand it
all to repeat here, so refer anyone interessted to the cited file.

That would not work for me. I truly need to charge the amount to a credit
card.

This could automatically debit your credit card monthly. I do not know
how it works for larger intervals.

The question I have is, can it work for people who are outside the US? That
was one of the groups I was hoping to facilitate...

If a credit card can, an automatic debit on a credit card can.

Wasn't planning on a monthly expense. I charge random amounts (donations,
auction, etc, plus a once-a-year $60 membership.

response 60 of 191: Mark Unseen   Sep 12 17:21 UTC 1998

The organization involved isn't just doing this for memberships, but
to encourage automatic monthly support donations. Grex doesn't make
much attempt to obtain such, usually tying donations to impromptu 'fund
raisers'. Apparently, though, at least for some good causes, people are
willing to make completely non-specific monthly donations. That organization
is getting ca. $3,000 per month this way.

I asked the question so that there would be agrement on the answer, rather
than assumptions that may differ.

Re #60: I have requested that Cyberspace Communications Inc be added to
the vendor list for online banking at Midwest Financial, and they have
done so. Therefore I could set up automatic monthly (or weekly, quarterly,
annual, etc) payment of dues (or donations). I did this primarily to
demonstrate that Grex is an acceptable vendor to be paid automatically
by online banking systems. Now the question is, can this be done
internationally. I don't see why not, as such funds transfer for ordinary
payment of bills is much better established elsewhere in the world than
in the US, and international funds transfers are also well established.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I got a call from Rane's bank the other day. All
the woman asked me for was to confirm our address; she didn't want a bank
account number. I assume they plan to send us checks if Rane asks them to
pay us regularly. (I asked her if that was what they'd do, but she didn't
know.) I don't think they plan on transferring the money electronically.

But that's odd, now that I think about it, because it would surely cost them
money to send us checks. Rane, was the service free, or would they take a
percentage out of your payment?
rcurl
response 66 of 191: Mark Unseen   Dec 18 18:27 UTC 1998

The service costs a flat fee of $2.95/mo. It would not be economical to
use it for just one account, of course, but over several dozen it is.
I was myself not sure when they send checks and when they use electronic
transfer. They don't tell us that directly, but they do state for each
transaction that at least x days should be allowed for the payment, where
x is sometimes 6 and sometimes 2. I think those are, respectively, mail
and electronic payments.

Overseas electronic transfer, last I knew, cost $40 per transaction, whereas
the fee for cashing a check sent in dollars was $13. I don't think if you
pay by credit card there is any such fee.

I bet there's some type of fee involved to stop currency speculation via
credit card.

It's hard to tell, from just reading this item, what the
current status of the credit card discussion is. However,
if at some point we attempt a trial, I would gladly
donate $25 or $35 for one month, if of course I could use
my Visa card.

I am currently a member, (at least I will be once Mark gets
my check,) but it is unlikely that I will consistantly
maintian my membership unless I can do so with my debit card -
I just don't use checks, so sending them off to Grex is a
big hassle.

I'm listening with open ears. I'm hearing things like this
more and more. I think Grex is going to have to be able to take
plastic before long.

John, could you just send cash instead of a check? Or postage stamps?
