Run a mail program. I suggest the one called pine, which you can
get to by entering pine at a prompt.

To get a copy of the Frequently asked questions about Grex, type !faq
at the Ok prompt. It contains information about email on Grex.
I use 'elm' rather than 'pine'. Neither will work unless your terminal
supports vt100 or ansi graphics. The program 'mail' works even then.

Hello, I'm from Belgium, this really works slow, and I really don't know how I
got here, but while I'm here I wondered how I could get an e-mail adress of my
own. I think I might created one allready, but how's it called? Tha nks...

And while it is true that connecting to Grex from Belgium is slow,
it is mostly because our internet connection is slow, and much less
(although somewhat) because you are so far away. So don't feel bad,
Jasper, it is almost as slow for everyone else, too.
We are working on ways to speed up the link, but we don't really know how
much more we can crank out of it.

Hi! I"m a first time user here on Grex... An am using the Lynx menu system and
Love it! Anyway I was wondering if anyone could give me or point me in the
direction to a file explaining how to set up my own home page... Thanks!

try out other things (as I see you are doing here!). But, for your own
home page - I'll defer to someone else (but would like to listen in...).

Hey Bobby! I'm one of the Lynx administrators here, so I'm
very happy to hear that you like it!
To create your own home page, select "Tips on Using Lynx",
then go to the last section, where it says "Make your own
homepage."

Or an even easier way is to type "mkhomepage" or "!mkhomepage" (depending
on which prompt you're ate--if one doesn't work, odds are the other will).
The mkhomepage program will set up your files and create a generic
homepage which you can then edit or replace with something better.

I have a question about using Mosaic and my internet account. I dial in to a
SLIP sytstem at my school in CA and dont' have a direct connection. Can I
still use Mosaic or Netscape in some way? I have figured out lynx andwish to
view graphics. Thanks.

To run a web browser you must have (over a telephone) a slip or ppp
connection to an internet node. I interpret your statement to mean
that you dial in with an asynchronous connection to your server and
it has the slip link. If so - that is how Grex is connected to the
internet (except for using ppp). With this setup the only way to view
graphics is to ftp them to Grex, and download them to your machine
(but Grex frowns upon this because it is a bandwidth hog, and
inconveniences everyone else).

Yes, you can run Netscape or Mosaic over a SLIP connection. I just got my
PPP connection to work tonight (after working on it for more time than I
care to admit.) To get in-depth help on Netcsape join the Netscape
discussion list by sending email to LISTSERV@irlearn.bitnet with only the
message SUBSCRIBE NETSCAPE Once you are a subscriber, you can send your
questions to NETSCAPE@irlearn.bitnet and everyone on the list (thousands)
can read and contribute to the discussion/answer.

I find Netscape rather transparent - especially after having started
with Mosaic (and having been blown off when I told them a beta
version crashed my Mac). Perhaps, you'd be better off to find a listserv
for PPP ;->.

I know what you mean Ken, It took me quite a while to get ppp running as well.
I like mosaic better than netscape. I'm running AIR mosaic, which
is faster and better than netscape. You should pick up a copy of that Bob,
I have used it on SLIP and PPP.

Has the term mosaic become public domain? I thought it was NCSA-Mosaic.
I certainly like Netscape a lot more than NCSA-Mosaic, but who are
these other pretenders?

Yes, there are several versions of mosaic that grew out of the original NCSA.
I think the NCSA version is public domain while others like Air Mosaic are
being developed by private corporations (for profit).

Yes, Netscape can be obtained by anonymous FTP from //netscape.com (very busy)

Yes, I've found it extremely difficult to get onto netscape's ftp
server. They've alleviated the problem recently by adding some new
ftp servers -- if ftp.netscape.com is busy, you can try ftp2.netscape.com
or ftp3.netscape.com.
Netscape is actually freeware for people in education -- students and
teachers.
You can get mosaic -- also freeware -- from ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu.
Again re netscape -- they're up to version 1.1, beta release 3. I've
had some problem with the MS-Windows version. If that's your platform,
you might want to grab netscape 1.0 -- somewhat less functionality,
but it seems to be pretty solid.
