I accept Valerie's nomination, and look forward to running with a fine group
of candidates.

'Fraid I second, third, whatever, my declination. I would be a poor choice,
on several grounds.

I'm waiting to respond, because I may get an assignment that keeps me out of
town a lot. I'll let you know early next week.

FINAL REMINDER: Sunday, Nov. 15 (tomorrow) is the last day to place new
names in nomination.
Nominees so far who have accepted are:
Eric Bassey (other)
Jan Wolter (janc)
STeve Andre (steve)
John Remmers (remmers)
Colleen McGee (cmcgee)
Jennifer Kriegel (jiffer)
David Cahill (dpc)
Mark Ziemba (mziemba)
Colleen's acceptance is conditional based on information she won't have
until after November 15. But since any other nominee could also withdraw
after that deadline, I think she should be included in the list.
Eight nominees for three open slots. I think this is the most
competitive Board election that we've had in a while.

Nominations for the Board are now closed, with the nominees being the
eight people listed in resp:50.
In accordance with the bylaws, the election will be held online and run
from December 1 through December 15. It will be possible to vote via a
terminal connection (telnet or direct dial) or the web.

Do the candidates get to post a paragraph online telling something about their
background and any changes they would like to see made in grex?

That has been the past practice...there has been a link to candidates'
statements from the voting system, in fact. I hope that will be done
again.

(Thanks.)
Right. Each candidate can make a statement that people can view when
they run the voting software. The statement is optional; in the past,
some candidates have posted one and some have chosen not to. As Election
Czar (a title that the Board seems to have conferred on me ;-), I always
email the candidates shortly before the election telling them how to
create a statement for public display.
In addition there's often been a Coop item for discussing issues
pertinent to the election. Rob Argy (ajax) used to post one with a list
of canned questions for all the candidates to respond to, but he hasn't
done that for a while.

Do you have any information on the correlation between winning and
having a posted statement (just correlations - not looking for any
specific cases)?

So you're concerned with a plurality of the electorate behavior data?

*a* plurality, or *the* plurality?

In the last election, all four of the winners posted a statement. Some
but not all of the other candidates did not. I think the pattern is
similar in earlier elections, although my memory of the details is a
little vague. I can't read the voters' minds, but they may view the
absence of a statement, and also low visibility in Coop, as a lack of
commitment.

I've also seen that happen in most voting by mail in other organizations.
The only exceptions I've seen to a poor performance by those not submitting
a statement is when there is a well know and respected persons running but
does not have a statement, while the candidates with statements are
"duds" or their statements are poor.
This word to the wise should be sufficient..... 8^}

Ah, but you forget that Grex is actually run by an inner circle, so that
outsiders have no chance to compete on an even footing, right?

Re 59, the data are. Can't drop the a after another a. But data is now used
interchangeably as a singular or a plural word. I recently saw bacteria used
as a collective singular, that looked really strange - there is bacteria all
over your beard.

Not in most scientific literature - they *are* still hold the data line.
I did in all my courses, too.
