Yes, I stand corrected. I don't know how I could have forgotten that - I
mean, it was only a little over a year ago... ;-)

I knew where to start and had the patience to wade through as much as
necessary to find it. :)

So, is there consensus, how is that judged, what does staff need to see to
reinstate the old 8-character limit?

I, for one, prefer a longer limit. It's hard enough expressing a personality
on a license plate; why make our online life as difficult?

I don't see why a userid should be used to express a personality. You can
always change your name in the bbs (and probably in party). Longer usernames
are just more bother to filter. Nobody but twits seems to be using them, they
don't print out properly with 'w'.

RE #408- Sindi, names, and thus handles, mean a lot to some people.
Names convey a great deal- more than most people think.
Just because you see nothing in it does not mean that other people do
not.

The long name standard is annoying.
I'm with Sindi on this.

Usernames are supposed to be an unambiguous, easy-to-type easy-to-remember
way to refer to a specific user. They are not primarily intended to be a
creative outlet.
Long ones do not serve this purpose better, and I say this as someone with
a long name which arguably could "benefit" from longer usernames.

I tend to think that usernames which are mostly pronouncable sequences
work better than usernames where the letters are all consonants. It's
also possible that mvh was taken when I registered nineteen years ago;
hard to remember. Maybe we should get rid of usernames and just use UIDs
for these things.

I'm waiting for remmers to comment. I'll try to take things to a vote "if
I have to", for all the good it would do.
In the mean time, grex mailbox handling is broken, AFAIC.

When I see "ken" and "dmr" and suchlike, that's when I miss having a middle
name. It's not as common in the UK as it is in the US.

My personal opinion is that people getting hot and bothered over long names
are letting themselves get overheated by a small number of prank accounts.
Below is a list of all the more-than-eight-character logins on the system
right now. Are they all evil? It is bad for "Ron Jeremy" to have the login
"ronjeremy"? Should "Mark Silverstone" not have the login "silverstone"? Is
"siegfried" an unreasonable login name? Is "intellectual" too hard to type?
Harder than, say "l01010l0"?
Personally, I think everything up to 12 characters is perfectly fine. There
are a total of 17 longer logins which don't bother me much either, if only
because I don't expect people to be logging in to them much. If people
really care I wouldn't object to reducing the newuser limit to 12 (and
increasing the webnewuser to 12). I don't think that would block any
reasonably desireable logins.
However, it's nice to have a nice login name. With tens of thousands of
users, it isn't always easy to find one. Allowing logins longer than
eight characters means more people have more chances of having a nice
login. Yes, it also increases the range of obnoxious logins that obnoxious
users might choose, but if you spend all your time focusing on the obnoxious
people instead of the nice people you are just going to make yourself
miserable. Let's be nice to the nice and not worry so much about the
obnoxious.

Judging from the above list, anything more than 12 characters apppears to be
the work of vandals, or at the very least of users who don't intend to use
these logins - Anotherteste . I would cut it off at 12 or even 11.

is the decision arrived at, what is needed to deploy?

10 or 12 sounds fine by me too.
The decision is arrived at when there is a sense of what is
reasonable from a reasonable majority. And those who disagree have
had a chance to state their case.
I think we're moving in that direction. I trust staff's judgement
to know when it's time. We really don't need a vote on this, Kevin.
Staff can handle it just fine.

Incidently, `ronjeremy' is more than likely not really THE Ron Jeremy,
who is a guy who holds the current world's record for appearing in the
most `adult' movies.
