We might have to meet fast this month. What is "UPS Purchase"?

winterfilth: curbs in Ann Arbor

response 5 of 29: Mark Unseen   Jan 21 05:00 UTC 1999

In some item or another we were talking about whether or not we should
buy a UPS (uninteruptable power supply) for Grex. I don't think we ever
got any figures on exactly what the power savings would be, and unless
we come up with such figures, then the board is unlikely to approve the
purchase of one, but I figured it belonged on the agenda.

(The item names are out of the middle of a longer sequence. I chose
this subset largely because "winterfilth" was so appealing a name.)

Oh! My mistake. I was thinking "United Parcel Service". They seemed a
little big for us to be buying. :)

You can tell a geek by what they think UPS means....

Hey, Mark is a geek, too, Rane.

I'd like to think so. However the last "UPS" I investigated for Grex was,
indeed, United Parcel Service.

Heh. That's about the size of it.

Any suggestions on meeting locations? Times? Zingerman's closes and
hour-and-a-half after our meeting starts. Does anyone have ideas for an
alternate location? Or can we start meeting eariler, say at 6:30?

6:30 would be fine with me.

response 14 of 29: Mark Unseen   Jan 22 21:58 UTC 1999

STeve and Mark said 6:30 would work for them. It works for me and
Valerie (who isn't on the board anymore, but she's at least easy for me
to poll).

There seems to be general agreement that we ought to try to get a merchant
credit card account, so why don't we make that an item on the agenda.

I'd like to see all startup costs, ongoing charges and fees
disclosed before a final decision is made. I'm probably
the only one but I still feel we are thinking too big
for our budget. We are spending money based on the
assumption that if we do, it will come, and that's the
way we'll pay for it.

If half of our existing members decided to switch to
paying by credit would Grex still be getting the
same net? No fair speculating on new members. ;-)

John is out of town at the moment but I don't think he'd
have a problem with a 6:30 start.

response 18 of 29: Mark Unseen   Jan 23 14:53 UTC 1999

I agree about disclosing starting costs online. If we get a deal like danr
has, we'd essentially be paying a flat rate to accept cards, so it wouldn't
matter (except maybe in really extraordinarily good months) how many people
paid by card. But clearly unless it brings in some new money, it won't be a
plus for Grex. (We should really discuss this in the credit card item,
though.) At the meeting I just want to ask the board for advice on how to
proceed. We're not ready to write any checks yet.

The 26th is the fourth tuesday, not the third. Was there a typo in
resp:1, or is this month an exception?

I'm back in town and can verify that a 6:30 starting time is fine with
me. (I prefer an early start like that, actually.)

response 21 of 29: Mark Unseen   Jan 25 19:31 UTC 1999

OK - though I don't think I've heard from everyone, I've heard from a
quorum. I've changed our reservation at Zingerman's to 6:30.

Oh, Board meetings on on fourth Tuesdays, not third. Sorry.

Did the board ever ratify the status quo of having outgoing http access
available to all? I remember its being discussed here a few months ago
but don't recall seeing anything in the minutes. If it hasn't been
acted on, it probably should be, one of these months.

Jep got the numbering scheme (does he really know these, or did he do a
web search?). Two more items added:

Agenda for the 1/26/99 Grex Board of Directors Meeting

              6:30pm - upstairs at Zingerman's Nextdoor

Afteryule Initial Gavel Pounding - janc 1 second
Solmath Election of 1999 Officers - all 15 minutes

Astron Publicity Committee - mta 5 minutes
Thrimidge Technical Committee - staff 10 minutes
Forelithe Stupid Landlord Tricks - aruba 10 minutes
Afterlithe Ratifying HTTP Access - remmers 3 minutes
Wedmath UPS Purchase? - all 10 minutes
Halimath Credit Cards - all 10 minutes

Blotmath Final Gavel Pounding - TBA 1 second

The "stupid landlord tricks" item concerns our latest transactions with
Flying Dutchman (what kind of realty company names itself after someone
cursed to be forever homeless?). I think Mark will enter and item with
some info about that soon.

I must admit, I did a WWW search. Did you type them in from memory,
Jan, or did you look them up? (If you typed them in from memory, I will
admit I cheated, otherwise I played the game appropriately. (-: )

I'm not accusing you of cheating, just wondering exactly how brilliant
you are.
