re #1
It was named after Vice President King. He was a self righteous bigot.

resp:2 not a rewriting of history. They just decided to essentially
rename their country from King (after William Rufus DeVane King) to King
(after Martin Luther King, Jr)

They've renamed the eponym but are also changing the logo. The logo change
will be a large cost to the county.

OK as long as their history books/pamphlets/plaques identify for whom the
county was originally named.

I think it should become "King, Jr." county to make the distinction clear.

Are there any other county (or parish or district) names that contain commas?

I still say we should have named the county after Billie Jean King.
That still would have been PC but not so cliche.

"Because of the unresolved licensing issues within the King estate, which
holds the franchise rights to Dr. King's image, it would be unwise at this
time for the Council to enter into any agreement that could have serious,
continuing legal ramifications. We don't want
the costs for using our logo to be subject to the whims of any outside party."
-Councilmember Jane Hague on February 27, 2006 prior to the vote

The Council did unanimously approve an amendment requiring the county
Budget Office to make biannual reports on the costs of implementing the
new logo. Another amendment putting the logo issue to an advisory vote
of the people failed by 4-5.

"This ordinance shall be implemented in phases to minimize cost. The county
shall continue to use the previous crown logo on existing items until
these are replaced in the usual course of county business, unless
replacement with the new logo is either minimal in cost or is
necessary for public health and safety purposes such as uniform
identification for King County law enforcement officers. The executive
shall coordinate with separately elected officials and branches of
government to encourage implementation of this ordinance in all county
agencies. The office of management and budget shall submit semiannual
reports to the council through 2009 on actual expenditures related to the
implementation of this ordinance. The reports should be submitted
beginning September 29, 2006, with the subsequent report due March 30, 2007,
and every six months thereafter. Eleven copies of each report shall be
filed with the clerk of the council for distribution to all councilmembers.
SECTION 7. Sections 2, 3, 5 and 6 of this ordinance take effect upon the
enactment of an ordinance approving the graphic standards, guidelines and
procedures for the use of the likeness of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., including the design of
Dr. King's likeness that shall serve as the official county logo as
required by section 4 of this ordinance."

I know - they should put the likenesses of *both* William Rufus DeVane King
and Martin Luther King on their logo, to show what a equal-opportunity,
broad-minded, tolerant community they are.

I say they just put Billie Jean King's likeness on the flag instead. Think
of how empowering it was to women when she beat Bobby Riggs in tennis :)

re #8
The point I finally get to is that the King Estate owns the trademark and
likeness of MLK, Jr and the county will have to pay for that. There was no
prior agreement so the estate can rake in the bucks if they so deem. Now,
without making conspiracy theories about a certain estate trustee having been
in Seattle for the MLK Day rally back on the what..19th of Jan....

So what you're saying is that this might be an attempt to push King
county into a position where it has no choice but to pay royalties.

Yes, the Kings will get royalties. There is no doubt about that.

Would I get my picture up on the county flag? Or would they at least let
me ride county buses for free?

I honestly wonder how many years before the county resorts to selling naming
rights, just like they do for stadiums..
