The cayenne pepper thing is also known in skiing circles. At least, that's
where I heard of it. Though, I seem to recall that you put it inside your
socks, but I could be wrong; I never did it.

It's possible that the magazine article contained a misprint when
it referred to the outside of socks.... Have to go find it and
reread.

The last I read, a couple years ago, was that
there were findings that topical applications of
cayenne had beneficial effect on "inflammation",
but the details of exactly what and how were not
discovered yet. A natural remedy that turns out
to be real, science still catching up . . .
Shortly after, products appeared in stores,
ointments with cayenne, actually they call
the extract capsaicin.
"Inflammation" itself is pretty mysterious
already, like fever, a defense mechanism that
can backfire and cause damage.
Main Entry: cap7sa7i7cin
Pronunciation: kap-'sA-&-s&n
Function: noun
Etymology: irregular from New Latin Capsicum
Date: circa 1890
: a colorless irritant phenolic amide C18H27NO3 that is found
in various capsicums and that
gives hot peppers their hotness

John, do you have any similar reference for the stuff which gives wasabe
its hotness? (I don't think it is the same compound.)

Is there some good reason that grex is using lynx 2.7 instead of the newer
2.8? What are the new features or improvements to 2.8?

See lynx.isc.org/release/ for info on Lynx 2.8.3. They are working on 2.9.
There is improved support for charsets, and ssl and table support. And many
bug fixes. Mich.com (bignet) has this version or some 2.8.x version. There
is one place still using 2.3.X!

Probably the reason is that lynx is moderately hard to get installed and
configured right on this system. It'd be nice if someone did it.
Actually, there are probably newer versions of must of the software on this
system. We aren't all that aggressive about updating things.

The page I looked at implied that there was now support for tables and SSL,
both of which sound useful. They are working on 2.9 - would it be worth
waiting for that? Someone else suggested that I use Links instead of Lynx,
which probably would not fit on grex (mouse support, tables, fonts).
I found a statistical list of most popular browsers. IE about 75%. Lynx
about .4%. Netscape and Opera about 20%. Some people still use Netscape 2
and even lynx 2.3 and 2.4. I added grex to a list of places you could go to
get a UNIX shell account. ALong with bignet/mich.com.

I looked at a version of lynx with ssl and wasn't very impressed.
Perhaps the support has gotten better since then, but it had some pretty
serious problems.

They said 2.8.3 had improved SSL, I think. How did your version do with
tables?

I was channel surfing Monday evening when I happened upon
a comedian doing a show on HBO. He's an Englishman who
describes himself as an executive transvestite and his
show was something like, "Dressed to Kill"; his name was
maybe Eddie Izzard?
Now, I'm not much into stand-up comedians and I'd only rank two
as great, Lenny Bruce and Robin Williams. But this Izzard
person is pretty darn good. Does anyone know how long he's
been around and anything more about him?

Eddie Izzard has been around for a while and shows up now and then
in an occasional film (the last one I can remember was "Velvet Goldmine",
which I would not recommend..)

Yes, his name is Eddie Izzard. I caught the same special on HBO, by accident
--- funny stuff.
This looks like a good place to begin looking for more info:
http://www.izzard.com or http://www.izzard.co.uk/
Sorry I can't help with more about how long he's been around, but I did see
where he's filming a movie now.

I recall seeing it or something like it awhile back.

Thanks, Mickey, I'll check out those sites.
You know, sexuality is funny stuff. When I first stopped
at HBO and saw this guy, my first reaction was that he looked
like a freak show. But after listening to him for the next
hour and enjoying his clever wit I found myself thinking of
him (her) as quite a sexy piece of work.

while never having seen him myself, That actor Guy does an imitation of
Eddie Izzard- which is amusing and makes me want to see more.
Something about being in the army and hiding make-up in a squirrel
hole? <grins>
Oh... And I don't recommend "Velvet Goldmine" either... It's not too
horrible exactly... And you do get to see... a lot of Ewan McGregor
(doing his Iggy Pop imitation).

I've been noticing over the past couple of days that someone has been
connecting to my computer at work, but not opening any files, except
IPC$. What is IPC$?

I don't know exactly what IPC$ is, but if you can't open it, Windows doesn't
let you browse the machine to see what shares are available.

I LOVE EDDIE!! Sorry... Don't mind me. I can just do the entire "dressed to
kill" show from memory, that all... :)
The thing of it is, although his trans jokes are funny, I think he's more
funny for his history jokes-- he does wonderful versions of the origins of
the church of england "I'll call it The Crazy Bastard Religion! Sir, how bout
the church of england? Yes, that's much better." and just religion in general:
"[as God] Jexus Christ, what on earth is going on down there?" "[Jesus]Don't
use my name in vain dad." "Jeezy Creezy, what on earth is going on down
there?" "And don't call me Jeezy Creezy! I told them to hang out and be
groovy..." "And what does the holy ghost have to say about all this?" "Oh,
he's useless dad, he spends all day running around with a sheet on his head"
"[holy ghost] Holy ghooost! Holy ghooost!" "[God] Holy Ghost, this is not an
episode of Scooby Doo" "[Holy Ghost] Drats! I would've gotten away with it,
if it weren't for those pesky god and jesus fellas."
Sorry. I'll hush now. But I do have it on tape if anybody needs to get their
hands on a copy. I'm just upset I never got tickets for his new show. :(

How do I change my charset to 8859-1? I read something about editing .cshrd
to add the line setenv LC_CTYPE iso_8858_1. I keep getting little messages
at the top of my mail saying that the mail is in this charset but I am not.
How do I edit .cshrc. I tried edit .cshrc and was told how many lines and
characters were in it, but nothing was displayed. Also I see what should be
a letter a as a Greek beta when using lynx, and this should fix that.
