Clearly you're under the impression that we paid attention to your
suggestion. I don't remember what you proposed. Selective memory is a
bitch.

Eric, John, I love these icons! I think we should make all of these
versions available for use. It will give everyone options, should they
wish to help in this way.

What would you suggest? I'm not web savvy enough to think of browser-
specific difficulties.

re #30: I got it to work, by FTPing the icon to my PC, right-clicking
and going to Properties, and pointing to my file name. Right now it's:

file:///c:/favicon.ico

Oops... that gives me a link to the picture, but I can't use it to
visit Grex. Rats! It seems you need a DLL file from which to draw an
icon.

I'll bet there's a desktop icon drawer somewhere that can do it.

Re #30: It should go automatically into the address bar, if it's placed
properly on Grex. Unfortunately that feature if IE has never been very
stable. The icons come and go at random for me on all sites, but I know
I've seen Grex's work on occasion.

I think konquer or however it's spelt does the faviocon thing.

I figured out how to do it:

If you want a particular icon (such as favicon) as your desktop icon
for Grex, create a desktop link to Grex (by dragging it from the
Favorites menu), then get favicon.ico on your computer, and then:

right-click on the icon, and select properties
Click on change icon
Click on browse
Enter the path and file name of favicon (for example, c:\favicon.ico)
You'll see the favicon image on your desktop

If you want this to appear in your Favorites, go to Favorites, then
Organize Favorites, and drag the desktop icon to the position where you
want it to appear

If you want it to appear on your Links line under the menu bar, then
copy it to the Links folder

So the icon that Remmers came up with can be used as a desktop icon if
users want a shortcut or if they want the icon added to their favorites
list. Just in case this is necessary, John, what browser did you use
(version number as well). Nifty! Remmer's and Other's submissions can
both be used by those with websites, no? Any other versions that folks
consider viable, please submit them.

I used IE 5.5-something.

I checked, but didn't see an equivalent for Netscape 4.79. I don't use
Netscape much any more; I'm required to use IE at work and it's easier
to use the same program at home, too.

Matter of fact... it's been so long since I've used Netscape...
there... it's gone.

Re #34: Right - Konqueror (the KDE browser) seems to do the "favicon"
thing right. It's the only browser I've found that does. As gull
noted, IE does it erratically.

Is it possible to have another link under the "support grex" section of
the home page where these other ways to spred the word about grex can be
added?

That sounds like a good idea to me. Talk to Steve Weis, who maintains the
web pages.

I did some things that might make the grex favicon.ico file show up on
more browsers, at least on Grex's home page and on the pistachio pages.
Just adding a link like the one below to each page.

<LINK REL="SHORTCUT ICON" HREF="/favicon.ico">

This is mostly needed to convince IE or Mozilla to fetch the favicon.
We could put it on more pages, but I'm too lazy right now.

The icon show up for me in Mozilla now, but not IE (I have 5.5).

response 47 of 55: Mark Unseen   Sep 14 12:52 UTC 2002

Yeah, same here. I'm not sure what IE wants. I think I did what it
says at http://favicon.com. Possibly IE is reluctant to learn new
favicons for sites it has seen before.

(I hard-set the icon in my favorites after copying [and renaming] it
to my ICONS file. my wild enduser guess as to why the icon disappears:
IE only remembers one favicon.ico at a time.)

(reportedly, Mozilla and Netscape handle the icons correctly over the
long haul.)
