re #30, 31: I've never had a knife drawn on me in either place,
from which I conclude both are perfectly safe, though I have been
abducted at gunpoint from a parking lot in Ann Arbor, so remember
to be extra careful there.. :-p
Actually, my sister Sheila has the best "Welcome to Detroit" story
of anyone I know personally. When Sheila graduated from Michigan
State she was accepted to the law school at Detroit College of Law
(which was at that time actually located in Detroit; somewhat
confusingly it's now in East Lansing..) Thus in September of 1980
or so she moved to Detroit, where she moved in with my sister Mariann
(who was also going to law school, at Wayne State.) Mariann's then
boyfriend (now husband of 20+ years) Bill had grown up in Detroit
and is a big booster of the area so he really wanted Sheila to form
a positive impression of his hometown. Bill is also a fanatic Tigers
fan and thus he hit upon the idea of taking my two sisters to a
late-season baseball game at Tiger Stadium on a sunny September
afternoon. All three of them were students at the time and none
had a lot of money to spare, so they bought the cheapest bleacher
seats they could get, which is where they made their biggest mistake..
As Sheila tells the story, a bunch of the other inhabitants of the
bleacher section that day were intoxicated and an argument broke
out in the stands just behind where they were sitting. Apparently
it escalated pretty rapidly because before they were quite sure
what was happening, a gentleman two or three rows behind them had
stabbed the man formerly sitting (now standing) behind Sheila and
the force of the thrust caused the man to fall backwards and land
sprawled across Sheila's lap. Welcome to Detroit!
