Does that mean there's not longer a 14.4 modem?

FWIW, I've never had a problem, even during the recent period of trouble,
dialing in on -3000.

        Even though I asked for a 9600baud connection on 761-4931, I
got a 2400baud connection for this session.

I'll have to double-check that number.

Like Dave - I have had no problems at all, dialing in on -3000 or -5041.

for those of you wiht zero probs...are yuo getting *that* modem or farther
down the hunt?

second, are you putting your modem into 'totally stupid/2400' mode first?

response 257 of 364: Mark Unseen   Aug 10 12:39 UTC 1997

The recommendation for modem dialing now is *not* put your modem in
dumb mode. There is no longer a need to do that, and the newer GVC
modems do better when connecting with smart modems.

        I dialed 7614931 and got a 2400 baud connection again. !f
shows I'm on ttyhb, equating to a direct dial into 7619546. Did
the trunk hunt become circular, or is it just out of order?
scott
response 259 of 364: Mark Unseen   Aug 10 21:54 UTC 1997

Probably just a bit out of order.

I've left my modem in "dumb" mode - no flow control, error correction, or
compression. I haven't paid any attention to which modems I get when I
dial into -3000 or -5041, since I never have any problem at 2400 or 9600
baud. I'm on h2 at the moment and *should* be at 9600 baud (seems fast....).
Some weeks ago when the suggestion was made to use error correction, etc.,
I tried it, but could not communicate, so switched back.

I *think* my Mac modem is probably running in "stupid" mode, because
I'm using 4-year-old ClarisWorks.

I guess this isnt a *system* problem per se, but I think the "Birthday
announcer" program needs to be updated. I keep seeing grex wish
birthdays to people who either left grex eons ago or were reaped eons
ago. Last week, Grex wished happy bday to "Sun", but grexer "Sun" is
now an Indian user, Kalinda/Mary (the former Sun) is no longer on grex.
Of course maybe it was the new "Sun"'s birthday as well? *shrug*

You can use that new lynx to say hi to mew at her web-site
http://www.mewsic.com . She may be former here, but she's
still mew after all these years.

Re #257: If I leave my modem in "smart" mode and dial -3000,
then more often than not I still have the buffering problem I
described earlier. The last line of output before input is
expected will usually have the last one or two characters
missing; when I type something, the remaining characters will
display, then my input will echo.

This has happened on h8 and h9. I'm on h9 now, with modem in
dumb mode, and am having no problems.

Backtalk suggestion:

How 'bout adding a "read brand new" button next to the
"read new" button. There are times when one has no time
to read all the newresponse items in an active conf like
agora, but would like hit the newly entered items to see
what discussions have been started.
scott
response 268 of 364: Mark Unseen   Aug 12 21:26 UTC 1997

You can request the item list, which includes response data, and just check
the newest items...

Yeah but thats a whole extra screen to call up. And Backtalk is
slow. better to have a button

Grex froze on my on my prior login, and then proceeded to time me out,
while I was unable to get any response. No, xoff wasn't. OK now.

Tried to telnet in. Here's what I got, repeatedly:

The connection was closed instantly upon the appearance of the word "login:".

(The item list page in Backtalk also has a read-reverse option. That requires
that you bring up another page, but it doesn't require that you select the
specific items).
