Kent's up! plumbum is the technical name of lead.

No, lead is the technical name for lead. Plumbum is the Latin name for lead.

I'm just quoting the dictionary, Rane, as you are so fond of doing yourself.

I'm not saying that "plumbum" doesn't appear in English dictionaries -
many obsolete terms do. I was just observing that plumbum is,
*technically*, i.e. at this time, not the technical name for lead. Thought
someone might want to know....  8^}

Well, I'm glad to hear you don't think dictionaries are infallable. :)

I was kind of surprised to see plumbum as the technical name for
lead, too, but languages change over time, but our dictionaries
change slowly (it's still interesting that it would have been
the technical name way back).

Okay, I'll try to have a new word in time next time I'm logged in.

That's why the symbol for lead is Pb. :)

True. However the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC)
decides questions of chemical nomenclature, and they chose the Anglo-Saxon
names for a lot of elements whose symbols derive from their Latin names
(Kalium, Natrium, Stannum, etc). There is a simple intro to this at
