I've done it quite a bit here at school, running applications on a computer in
a lab on the display in my dorm room, now that I have the account on the lab
computer (since the computer science club owns the computers and runs the lab).
I do this because my local computer is quite slow compared to those. As far as
I can tell, X forwarding must be enabled in sshd, and IIRC it isn't by default.

I just saw this when starting up bbs:

warning: libc.so.38.2: minor version >= 3 expected, using it anyway

Seems to be working anyway...

response 31 of 333: Mark Unseen   Mar 28 08:51 UTC 2006

That's a known problem, based on a mismatch in shared library versions
between what bbs was compiled against vs. what's running on grex now.
It's been doing that for quite a while, probably this is just the first
 time you noticed..

I don't usually get 'you have new mail' messages when I have new mail. Is
there something I should be setting in pine, or is this a system setting?

[A friend of mine using AOL tried to find a way to whitelist my address.
Would it be worth someone on staff phoning AOL's number below to try to
get them to put us on their system-wide whitelist? This is the same AOL
that told someone else to clear their hard-disk cache of images when they
were short on RAM.]

response 43 of 333: Mark Unseen   Apr 4 16:55 UTC 2006

Ticket number 1189406 - they are investigating our case and I should hear back
within 5 business days. AOL blocks IP addresses which send mail which AOL
members report as spam. I told them we blocked outgoing mail to new users
2-3 months ago and to please unblock us if they have not received recent spam.
She suggested we set up a 'feedback loop', which means going online and giving
them an address to which they forward any spam reported as coming from us.
Could staff please do this directly? AOL does not use other blacklists, they
said (not SORBS), just their own. Is there any progress on restricting new
users to 25 outgoing mails a day so that new users can send outgoing mails
and we will have a better chance of keeping interested people? I think perch
has given up on us.

Seems like the best an automated test could do would be to report:

Grex appears to be down. Don't know why, whether anyone is
working on it, or when it will be back up. Have a nice day.

Would that really be all that useful?
kingjon
response 48 of 333: Mark Unseen   Apr 6 00:27 UTC 2006

If it said "The last time Grex was known to be up was <such-and-such-a-time>,"
it would be useful -- and then staff could edit that to say what was going on
if they got to it.

Yes, resp:48 says what I would expect to happen if the idea was
implemented in a reasonable manner. How much good does the current
status page do?
