grex.cyberspace.org also fails. cyberspace.org still works.

I've restarted named; we'll see if that helps.

I have the vague impression that one of the domain names is in the process
of being transfered. I wonder if that has anything to do with this.

response 29 of 384: Mark Unseen   Jan 3 20:55 UTC 2004

I don't think it does, Jan.

I tried getting the domain files from grex.cyberspace.org and failed, which
makes it likely that puck.nether.net and dns.gibbard.org couldn't get them,
either. After restarting named, I succeeded in getting the domain files.
It looks like nether.net and gibbard.org have some of the records but not all.
I'm hoping they will soon try again to update from us.

Still not working.

cyberspace.org works from some places, grex.org from others. various
subdomains of either work depending on the server from which i'm testing.
looks like we are watching a wave of soa expirations.

I've sent a message to our secondaries, to ask that they jump-start the zone
transfers. It looks like one has, but the other hasn't yet.

grex.org is now working for me again. This appears to be progress.

I wish I'd remembered about cyberspace.org. grex.org was inaccessible for
several hours from these parts, too.

response 37 of 384: Mark Unseen   Jan 4 04:35 UTC 2004

They're both working for me now. cyberspace.org was transferred from
Verisign to Dotster recently - the transfer was complete on (I believe)
December 31st.

I was not able to telnet to grex.org ( had to use the ip) but I was able to
browse www.grex.org. [yesterday]

A number of people in party (including me) have found all mail spool
files missing.
janc
response 42 of 384: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 10:12 UTC 2004

Grex's mail disk died. I spent most of the night re-arranging disks so we
are back up. However none of the lame things I tried allowed me to get data
off the mail disk. Kip will try something less lame tommorrow ... er ...
later this morning, but I wouldn't get your hopes high. I think that all the
mail that was in the mail spool (delivered but not read) was lost.
gelinas
response 43 of 384: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 11:44 UTC 2004

Right now, mail is being delivered but it cannot be read. I've sent a
message to learn if this is accidental or deliberate.
russ
response 44 of 384: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 14:29 UTC 2004

Here's part of the problem:

drwx------ 29 root wheel 512 Jan 4 20:37 /usr/spool/mail
janc
response 45 of 384: Mark Unseen   Jan 5 15:29 UTC 2004

Oops. That was accidental. That partition had been previously used for
something else, and I forgot to change the perms. Should be OK now.

Thanks for tryin'. Was that particular disk only used for mail?

Thanks also go to Kip, who came by to help last night, stayed around for a
long time before it became clear just how slow moving data around on Grex is,
and will be putting in some more time trying to recover data from the disk.
