The Grex status page says Grex is up... and that the status was updated
on February 3.

Is there a way to have the system update this with the current date-
time stamp, perhaps once per hour? Maybe a cron job could add a date-
time stamp to a file and then FTP the file over to the status page on
HVCN or something.

If I were having trouble connecting, that status message would not do
much to reassure me that Grex is working and the problem is on my end.

What you suggest doesn't make a lot of sense. If Grex were down, it
would not be able to update the page to that effect.

What would make sense is if the status page could have a script that
pings Grex once an hour and reports the results and the timestamp.

Staff could manually edit the page in case of an outage to supply
additional information...

SRW, what do you think? Is this a reasonable possibility?

Eric, if Grex cannot update the page, it would be a sign that Grex is
down, wouodn't it? Make the message say:

Grex was up as of 03/15/2006 09:30 a.m.

If it is scheduled to update it every 10 minutes, and you see it hasn't
been updated for a day, then Grex is down.

I don't know which would provide better information, a ping or having
Grex update an offsite page, but either would provide some information.

If Grex is down because of staff work, then a staffer could provide
additional information as it becomes available.
