I'm told the long version of "Dune" is good, but the short version is so
absolutely painful that I can't fathom giving the long one a chance.

Does the long version of Dune use more of Lynch's material, or does it
incorporate material created by others?

Unless the "long version" he's talking about is the SciFi Channel's
mini-series, it uses more of Lynch's material, missing some of the
finishing touches (e.g. special effects.)

It's the original movie as made by Lynch, but about an hour longer.

I really like David Lynch in general, but did NOT like Muhulland Dr. at
all.
I always thought that his stuff made sense in a "not making sense" kind
of way, but this one I just didnt' get.

I thought "Mulholland Drive" was enigmatic in an exceptionally
entertaining sort of way. "Lost Highway" was enigmatic but not
so entertaining.
