I suppose it's possible that some users might start to confuse the two
systems; if they kept seeing "M-Net is having a fundraiser" in Grex's MOTD,
they might start to think M-Net and Grex were the same thing. (I've gotten
mail from a number of people who refer to our system as "cyberspace", so I
know we're not doing a completely effective job of getting people to recognize
the name "Grex".)

You'd have to change to grex.org to do that.

Actually, we have registered grex.org.

Re resp:23 - historically, there's a strong link between M-Net and
Grex, but history is history, now is now, the two systems have
independent governance and have evolved in different directions,
and I don't see how it translates into motd space for fundraisers.
Anyhow, the Agora conference is available for any non-profit,
including M-Net, to announce events.

I myself would be in favor of having the system switch to using grex.org
for outgoing mail etc; but I have no idea what everyone else thinks.
(This seems like something that might be reasonable to thave the membership
vote on, too.)

I always use grex.org because it's easier to type, but I do think
cyberspace.org looks cooler.

*grin* me too scg. I tell people cyberspace, even though I use grex myself.
I think it's easier for people to remember.

Every time I hear someone mention my e-mail, they refer to it
as "Rob's cyberspace account". It's easy to remember, that's
for sure!

Isn't the issue (mostly) making sure we aren't confused with grex.com?
(Enter "grex" by itself as an URL in most browsers & they'll default to
grex.com - which features mostly pictures of immodestly-clad women....)

I think if outgoing mail came from "grex.org" instead of
"cyberspace.org", we'd have fewer mail users. Some come here expressly
because "user@cyberspace.org" is a cool E-mail address.

Too bad we didn't think to take cyberspace.com just to keep
some one else using it.

I'd rather be known for organizing cyberspace than commercializing it.

        Have your tried cyberspace.com?

   Yup.

We got there fast enough to be able to register our rightful name. Many
organizations didn't. Cyberspace.org turns out to be a very cool domain,
so the way I see it, getting cyberspace.org was a coup.

grex.org was a defense, basically, to keep others from getting it. I
don't object to users using it, but I really want to see the system
continue to use cyberspace.org as our preferred domain, even though
thousands of new users haven't yet figured out that their new account is
on "grex," not "cyberspace."

Sorry, I don't care to see mnet's or any other organizations' fundraiser
announcements in grex's motd. I couldn't care less about any historical
"ties" between mnet & grex.

I agree. Grex's motd should pertain to Grex specific news.

How owften DOES M-Net have fundraisers?

Approximately quarterly.

I don't think that would be a great MOTD burden, depending on how long we left
the announcement up.
