Small towns quite don't have a record store besides the one at Wal-Mart or
other huge store. So if Wal-Mart decides not to carry something, it's at
least partially censored. Also, record companies will try to make releases
more "tipper friendly" to avoid losing sales from chain bans.
Can we say "chilling effect"?

They already do that..that is, folks like Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson.
But hey, if you want to chew bubble gum, you can have any flavor.
Personally, I go for the less palatable of main stream.

On the other hand, requiring a private business such as WalMart to carry
things they don't want to carry would have pretty troubling free speech
consequences.

I agree. Kind of like making a print shop do gay raffle tickets.

Rob Zombie and Marilyn Manson both came to fame far after the appearance of
the Tipper Sticker.

No one put a gun to their head when Walmart asked for a more
mainstream edition of their hits. They did them.
Tipper Sticker?
Heck, I remember Al Gore asking our fellow Mensch, Dee Snyder, if he
felt the Twisted Sister lyrics were of "Christian Family Value" and
I remember the stare Dee made back at Al..the kind that burns holes
in leaves with a magnifying lense.
I'll take a Tipper sticker before I'll take a ProLife warmonger like
Cheney.

Me too. Hence my vote for Gore. One issue is not enough to change my vote.

No no no, todd...Prince Al asked what the fan club letters stood for and I
believe it was the Fucked up friends of twisted sister. And al asked if that
was a "Christian Group" and Dee said that he didn't think that religion
factored into it.
Tipper and Al did nothing but annoy me. Sitll annoy me on this issue. If
Wally World wants to stock different editions with the sticker (Like White
Zombies mix cd with the bikini or without (even though you really couldn't
see anything either way, she was in a hamock for god's sake)) it's rediculous.
We're making laws so that parent's do not have to take responsibility for what
is going on in the lives of their children.
Funny enough, I did a paper on this after columbine for a class I was taking.
And if you look, the transcripts from the hearings dating back to the
beginning in the 80's are availible on the web for free. Interesting reads,
for sure

A large part of the public is clearly disgusted with the music they're buying
and the movies they are watching. The only organized "resistance" they can
come up with is voting in candidates with ridiculous views. It's a sad case
of an absence of middle ground. Hollywood steadfastly claims first ammendment
rights, consuming public steadfastly blames hollywood, congress can only limit
the first ammendment. Restraint and responsibility are cuss words in this
society.

So why don't they stop buying and watching already?

Thanks for the clarification. My memory wasn't so hot, but I remembered
Al using religion as his divining rod.

--> No serious politician would, unfortunately. They'd all sign it to
ensure their political survival. In that sense the game is rigged; anyone
capable of getting elected will disagree with you on this.

resp:22 - The thing I find chilling is the assumption that the people in
the small town have no choices.
They may choose to live in a place in which WalMart is the only music
store.
They may choose to travel to a larger town to make purchases.
They may choose to find web access and make purchases.
They may choose to only use AM radio as a music source.
No one is in a position (yet!) to dictate the bahavior of individuals. Ya
get what ya take.

Re #45: It's like I tell a friend of mind, when he complains about his lack
of DSL service..."It's a tradeoff. You made a choice to live way out in the
country. There are benefits and drawbacks. This is one of the latter."
