I have a thought on the lag problem. I wonder if there really is lag on the
dialins? I sometimes get really bad "lag" on telnet. (Note, it's not really
lag from the link, but lag from Grex being slow) However, people on telnet,
being used the *slow* 28.8 modem for all these years wouldn't think the lag
was unusual, while the dialin people might. (Now, the dropped text is
something else... Has anyone with the dropped text tried a ^L to refresh teh
screen? I'd guess it's a line noise problem) Do any of the people with lag
telnet? Do they see the lag when they telnet?

I've refreshed things occasionally, they always show up with the missing text
back, but iut's bloody annoying.

grex is REALLY slow today...twice I waited from #20 in the que, and grex
was so slow that it timed me out before I could login. I typed in my
name and waited minutes before the password prompt came up. After the
second time I threw up my hands and came in via backtalk.

**Richard wishes Grex could move onto the new SUN **soon**

(By ".exe"s, I guess you mean those mails which contain lots of
special characters. Or did I miss something last Diwali?)

Diwali == Deepavali == Deepa + Avali == A cluster of lights (Sanskrit)

I assumed people were mailing each other animated greeting cards.

probably a good assumption... I know I received a few animated "cards"..

I'm still having trouble with random garbage which either fills the
screen and then dumps me from the system or freezing the screen. If this might
be caused by line noise, what can I do to eliminate it?

I'm on a dialin and performance is s-l-o-w. The load average is about
35. What's going on? Yesterday at about this time Grex was quite
fast, with a load average only 18 or so.

Slow is hardly the word. I ended up using elm to read mail as pine wasn't
moving at all.

response 245 of 263: Mark Unseen   Mar 3 16:15 UTC 1998

Just did a ps to check out what was going on. Doesn't seem to be
anything particularly unusual going on -- just a whole lot of
users logged on doing normal stuff. 55 users, 326 processes,
17 pine sessions, 18 sendmails, 8 httpd processes, 14 bbs
processes, 4 party sessions, 9 lynx sessions, etc. etc.
Load average is around 30.

I suspect the sluggishness is due to the high number of users
running piggish applications like 'pine'. It does seem like a
large number of people logged in for this time of day.

Dialin performance is awful right now. No other way to describe it.
