Re 224: Staff made that decision because grex is currently running on
32MB RAM and the previous number of simultaneous users was reasonable
when we were running on 128 MB RAM. I think it's too soon to tell
how much better grex performs with the current number of users.

What is wrong with performance today? I'm having real terrible lag between
what I type, and it showing up on the screen. I'm on a dial-in. Also when
Grex is showing me intro screens and responses it pauses for seconds at a time
in the middle of a word or a line.

It seems to be screaming fast right now. I'm on a dial-in, which is rare.

There also seems to be a modem that just rings and rings. I don't know how
to find out its number, but several times I have heard it ring more than 7
times, and not roll up to the next number.

I've been kicked off grex three times today. In the middle of mail, too, so
it was a pain to get back to what I was doing.

Either mail is hosed, or it's really really slow getting here. Stuff I
have had sent to myself late last night/early this morning hasn't yet
arrived.

Last night, on another system, I received a 4-hour-can't-send-mail warning
about messages I'd sent to users on Grex 4 hours before. The reason given
was "connection refused". I tested by telnetting to Grex's sendmail port,
& got connection refused. So there may well have been a problem at that
point (which I think included the time nako posted #235), and it may still
be there for all I know.

While logging in during my favorite conferencing time - 1 to 2 a.m. - I
learned that conferencing had been turned off so mail could be handled. I
see from the above that this was an unusual circumstance (mail dammed up),
but still, it would be nice to give the priority to conferencing rather
than mail. Also, one has to wait for the queue, and then log in, before
getting a fleeting message that you can't log in. Could that message be
placed at the beginning of the queue?

Richard, you've been told before that using backtalk slows down the mail
proccessing. You've been asked, politely, not to use backtalk while mail is
processing, so that Grex will be available sooner for *all* users. Get a
clue!!!

Valerie, M-Net has not been down for almost 7 days now. We *have*
been (briefly) off the Net due to problems upstream from WWNet, our
ISP. However, these were only short periods, and there is no reason
I can think of that there should be a ton of mail for M-Net sitting
in Grex' queue.
Could you send mail to xenon313@m-net.arbornet.org and
thaler@m-net.arbornet.org and describe the mail problem to them?
We certainly want to see that the mail gets delivered. Thanx!

after many, many attempts today, i've finally managed to connect to a
9600-bps modem. other attempts earlier this afternoon and evening resulted
in 761-5041 connecting me to a 2400-bps modem. are other people having this
problem?

I was earlier. I would get on, and have just enough time to type 'arthurp'
and then get NO CARRIER. I just gave up for a while. Prolly that new modem
that snuck into the hunt.

re 241:
Grex had some special stuff set up for dealing with grex to M-Net mail,
left over from the early days of M-Net's Coast to Coast connection, when
M-Net wasn't accepting mail.. That stuff failed. It didn't really have
anything to do with M-Net or WWNet.

tty h7 is acting a little screwy. When it first starts out the data
flows slowly, then picks up to about what looks to be 2400.

#240...Catriona, the only reason I even knew that to mention it was that
I was using Backtalk once while grex was down for mail processing and
didnt even know it. So long as Backtalk is available, people are going
to be on it at all hours, including such times. If staff really wanted
people to not use Backtalk when grex is down for mail processing, they
would take httpd down at that time as well.
But then of course, the staffer babysitting grex while it processes the
mail couldnt conference either could he/she? I think that once grex is
partitioned, this is going to be moot anyway.
