Natrium is not the "technical name for sodium" but rather simply the name
for sodium in most languages other than English, most of the Italic and
the Celtic languages. Its discoverer, Sir Humphry Davy, named it Sodium in
1807. It wasn't until 1814 that Berzelius suggested Natrium (shortening
the form Natroniuim) and the symbol Na for sodium, although in his first
"system of atomic symbols" he called it Sodium, and gave the sumbol So.
(I could not find when Na was first codified internationally as the symbol
for sodium.)
