If we can, then what is the harm in doing it? (Of course, we need not
give the facilities to the unregistered surfers.)

I suppose making e-mail and party accessable from the web would be the logical
next step in making Grex's traditional set of features easily usable by web
users. However, we have made a decision at some point that offerng POP mail
service (which would presumably be how we would have people do their mail from
their web browser) would have us swamped with mail users, and that that's not
really what we want.

Re #199: There were no "shoulds" in what I said. Just an observation
that over time, if people access Grex more and more via the web and
less and less by telnet/dialup, *and* if the only service Grex offers
via the web continues to be conferencing, Grex may become less of a
"community" as a result. Such a change isn't going to happen overnight,
so there isn't an urgent problem here that requires quick fixes. But
I think it would be nice to keep an open mind about offering more
services via the web, especially as web technology advances and some
things become practical that aren't so practical today.

Mail via POP could be done today, but as Steve points out, there are
reasons why we don't want to do that. That's sort of a non-issue
anyway, I think, since people who can access the web also tend to
have email accounts elsewhere, to a large extent.

On the other hand, "tel" and "party" might be something we could offer
via the web someday.

I have something to say about 'backtalk': if for an item, there is only
one new response, it shows only that one. So almost always I have to
get the previous 'n' ones to understand the context. Can't it be done
such a way that a minimum of the last 3 reponses will be displayed if an
item has at least one new response?

Is there some help available on the Grex manners (Grexiquette?)?
Especially on 'bbs' etc.

Actually that is the same thing that picospan does. It is time-tested.
However, as with picospan, you can ask to see earlier responses if the
context is insufficient to understand the response.

Unless you are using lynx, or some other browser that cannot handle
tables, I would recommend the pistachio interface. Then you can change
the "View Responses" control which usually reads something like 0-198
to say 195-$ and click on its button.

We never added that functionality to vanilla, though.

In picospan, type -3 at the R_or_P prompt.

Grexiquette? Hmm, I have something about protocol in puck's plan, but that has
to do with party.
