HVCN is back up, so Grex's graphics-related website and backtalk
problems should be past now.

I've gotten noise after the "wait a bit" message a few times. Once in a
while, it interfere's w/ my login and asks for [^O's password or something,
but after getting past that there aren't any problems.

The modems were off for about 20-30 minutes this afternoon, for reprogramming
and proper arrangement with phone lines, etc.

You must have done a good job Scott, Grex is flying right now, even with my
archaic modem!

OK, the modem programming hasn't changed any. However, they are wired up so
I can track down problems better.
If you are having trouble with modem connections from 761-3000, try dialing
761-9546 to get one of the older modems. The speed will still be 14.4, but
the older modems tend to work better for some people.

Just now when I logged on I was told "Bad participation file"
and everything in Agora was new. Also, when I started this response
I was informed:
Saved old edit buffer /a/d/p/dpc/cf.buffer as /a/d/p/dpc/cbf.a03817
Since I didn't have an old edit butter, I don't know what this is supposed
to mean.

Could be a side effect of the disk-full problems. I think backtalk especially
may not be terribly good at coping with full disks. This is something I need
to work on.

Do you know who the vandal was? Did he dial in or telnet in? I've got a ball
bat I'd like to use on him. Can grex protect itself by rejecting disk space
allocation requests when available space is below some limit, e.g. 1MB, except
for priveleged programs?

If per-user disk quotas were enabled, the vandal wouldn't have
been able to fill up the disk. We haven't done that because
the overhead of enforcing quotas would be too much for our
current processor. When we move to the new Sun, perhaps that
issue should be looked at again.

I can understand (though I don't myself enjoy) the impulse that leads
people to try and get around barriers and break into places they're
not wanted but what's the point, other than being nasty to other users,
of denial-of-service attacks on an open system like Grex?
There's no challenge or creativity involved -- anyone can do it with a few
Unix commands. There's no thrill of conquest or discovery, nothing stops
anyone from doing it beyond good will and civil behavior. I guess I should
be reassured by the fact that these incidents only occur once or twice in
many thousands of Grex logins and the overwhelming share of visitors seem
willing to share Grex's resources peacefully and responsibly but it does
disturb me that there are people who take pleasure in damaging things just
to deny pleasure to others..

As I type this, I"m getting some extremely heavy processor delays. I'm not
sure what from, though it stands to reason that someone is occupying more than
the normal system resources.

Perhaps not attention, but just a reaction. We never know who they are,
so can't really give them attention. We react, however. It is like burning
cats.
