Catriona, you would have to have an account with an Internet Provider in order
to use that program. It's not something you could use directly with Grex.

Ah-hah. Thanks, Val. Guess I'll wait, omni.

Yes, Omni's lack of arrow keys is not the only thing stopping him. You have
to have TCP/IP support, which requires for Mac owners that they get a copy
of MACTCP or Open Transport. Then you need to have an ISP that you can call
to get TCP/IP (PPP) connections from. THen, as was said, you need a small web
browser if you only have 4MB.

But if you want to build a homepage, you can use it to see how that page
will be displayed when on the net and with someone accessing it. In that
regard it's a useful tool, but without an ISP, that's all it is.
I might add that you can use any word processor to create a homepage.

I get along just fine with out arrow keys, thank you very much!

Omni can use lynx and doesn't need arrow keys, as the numbers are keyed to
the equivalent arrows. 8=go up, 2=go down, 6=go in, 4=go back
also less well known 9=page up, 3= page down, 7=top of doc, 1=end of doc.

In order to see how it looks in Netscape, he should stop by the 3rd floor of
the AA district library and point one of the free netscape stations at it.

One of these days, I'll boogie down there and look it over. Right now, I'm
happy with what I'm doing.

Just as long as the end result looks decent, is all I'm after.

as for lynx, I use vi keys, since I am one of vi's most ardent disciples ;)

 It's a lot easier.

back when i was using the dumb term, which has neither arrow keys nor
numeric keypad, i used various control characters to move the cursor around
in pico. would the same thing work in lynx?

I just checked the lastest incarnation of my homepage and it looks really
good. But I am still not done. I think it might take another 2-3 weeks.

IWLTA that I submitted grex to be listed in "the ring", a list of
michigan boards located at www.ring.com, that somebody on mnet told me
about Grex will bel isted under "clubs" and under "arts and entertainment"
I think. A little publicity neverhurts.

Results of the 1996 Grex Board election are in. Winners are
Valerie Mates (popcorn), Jan Wolter (janc), and Steve Gibbard
(scg). See Item 24 in the Coop Conference for detailed election
results.

Congrats to the winners and thanks to all who participated in
the election process!

One of the dial-in modems was failing, probably ttyh7. I've taken ttyh7
off-line, to see if this fixes the problem. I'm not convinced that it is the
problem modem, because the problem modem was connecting with a non-error-
correcting connection, and yet this modem is an error-correcting modem. But
we'll see. If this doesn't fix the problem, we'll try taking ttyh8 off-line
instead.

We finally have our Centrex-Mate configuration information. That was needed
in order to make some security-related changes to the configuration before
putting the new GVC modems on-line. Mike (nephi) is going to have the
programming on the Centrex system done by the end of the week. He's our
Centrex expert. After that, we should have the new modems on-line shortly.

Does that mean that Grex will connect higher than 9600bps?

popcorn
response 188 of 205: Mark Unseen   Dec 18 07:11 UTC 1996

Nope. That has to wait until the terminal server is working. But it does
mean that a lot of people who currently have trouble connecting to Grex's old
non-error-correcting modems will now be able to connect okay.

I've proposed a bylaw amendment and a regular motion in the coop conference.
The bylaw amendment clarifies whether non-members may be nominated to run for
the board of directors, and it clarifies whether non-members may make
nominations.

The regular motion is to allow anonymous reading of Grex's public conferences
via Backtalk.

These proposals will be under discussion for the next two weeks, after which
I expect we'll have a membership vote on them.

i'd like to announce that i have an old 2400 modem.. it's a hayes something
or other.... it's slow i know, but if grex wants it, you can have it, my dad's
going to throw it away otherwise..

response 191 of 205: Mark Unseen   Dec 19 20:19 UTC 1996

Grex wouldn't use it for its dial-in lines, but we could
probably sell it at the JCC sale for between $1 to $3. At
that price, it's not worth going much out of your way, but
we'd certainly accept it.

I use that old 2400 modem at school. Its slow (and rusty) but it gets me to
Grex when I want to be there.

I'm looking for someone who can repair the swivel chair that sits in front
of the Grex console. It is on four wheels (casters?). The wheels seem to
be attached by pins that stick into holes in the corners of the X-shaped base
of the chair. One of the wheels is forever falling out. Thanks in advance...

Next time the caster falls out, wrap the stem with a small piece of
cardboard, tape so it stays in place, and cram it back in the hole.
If that doesn't work, we might have to replace the caster.

No, but if you log in on Sunday December *22*, you might. >8)
