Classical music is here, hooray!
But there's a problem in the hay.
Three times to respond I tried;
Each time my connection then got fried.
That is, I am sorry to tell,
I got dumped, without a bell.

That's odd. I just tried it, & it worked fine for me, Rane.

Methings we are off the Net.
Hope someone can now reset,
If noone can try,
Methinks I shall cry
And my keyboard will be all wet.

For most of the afternoon we were off the Net
The cause I do not know yet.
I think it was something at ICNet.

I suspect ICNet is having great trouble.
Their link problems are double.
I can not keep a connect at work,
with ICNet, for what it's worth.

The place where I've lately been consulting,
has also had problems from ICnet resulting.

(sorry for the lack of rhyme)

some of the dialins are refusing to show a login screen. they'll connect,
but all they show is a blinking cursor. the problem seems to be with the top
three dialins in the trunk hunt.

response 183 of 231: Mark Unseen   Dec 15 23:32 UTC 1996

Out of curiosity, have you tried hitting return after you connect? I've found
that some of the dialins will just sit there until I hit return, at which
point they will spew a login prompt.

i've tried.. i know at least 3000 and 3411 are both acting funky, and have
been for quite some time..

It looks like at least one of our modems is acting up. I
recommend that anyone who dials Grex direct keep a list of
all of our phone numbers handy, so if one modem is doing that,
you can try the others.

The listing can be viewed by typing "phones" at a Unix prompt,
or "!phones" at the Ok: or Menu prompt.

Last time I encountered a stuck modem, it was a slow modem that I could reach
with 761-3000, -3451 and -3411 -- if that gives us any clue about which modem
in the trunk hunt it is. I'll go "kill the gettys" to reset Grex's side of
the connections.

also, i ahve had the same p[roblem as #182, but i just got here. i send a
bunchof 'break' signals (usually ctrl-b or alt-b depenidng on your comm
progarm) to get the grex modei to think right.

takes a couple of hits

hmmm. i've tried hitting return, with no luck. next time i'll try sending
a break.

Break usually seems to fix a connection
When there's already stuff on the screen for correction.
If there's nothing at all, not to be crude,
But Grex or its modem probably are screwed.

Did grex go down earlier today between ~11:15am & noon? That's when I was
on; reading some conf. items, I was left hanging in the middle of one, and
then after a few idle minutes, grex disconnected me...

Our net connection probably died. I found it down at 1:30 and rebooted
it.

response 194 of 231: Mark Unseen   Dec 17 00:14 UTC 1996

Grex has five hours of uptime, so it looks like it rebooted sometime around
2 pm.

This is not s system problem, but this is as good a place to ask it as any.
I am logging in on A Mac. My husband recently installed a cd rom drive and
since then, I can't get the screen to print out when I try to log into grex.
The machine goes through all the usual noise, then nologgin on the screen.
I think I am on the line. I tried my AOL account, and there too, was given
some response that said, in effect, sorry you can't get through. Any ideas?

From your description, I'm not sure what is happening. But if you'd like,
I can stop by your place and take a look at it.

I tried all the numbers, zero zero to five four,
trying to log onto grex,
no responce to my 'breaks', until I had tried,
seven six one, three five, nine six.

Re 195, that doesn't sound like something a CD-ROM would directly cause on
a Mac. I wonder if maybe he jiggled a phone connector, so the phone line
is getting too much static for a clear connection now. I suppose there's
a remote chance the CD-ROM is emitting interference, but that seems quite
remote. Could be a software problem, but that's also relatively unlikely.
I'd replug or maybe even replace the phone cord from the wall to your modem
first.
