For some, that test message costs money. I can give you an invite for free.

When I try to telnet to grex right now, it won't let me, saying:

telnetd: All network ports in use.

What is going on here?! (this response posted via the web)

30+ minutes later telnet login succeeded. What happened to the telnet
queue? With nextgrex we're not supposed to be denied login with a "no
ports" condition, right?

Does this represent the above problem:

We seem to be running out of pty's. It may be a problem of
"screen" processes not getting deleted when people log off.

Can somebody on staff Help with my Mailbox? THe inbox on my user account has
disappeared. I'd send email on the problem, but I have( obviously) no way to
receive a staff response without an inbox.

Is anyone planning to work on the modems this weekend?
keesan
response 189 of 276: Mark Unseen   Dec 10 18:35 UTC 2005

At least three of us who want to use the modems are paying members and at
least one paying member is considering no longer being a member if grex modems
cannot be made to work soon because he will have to pay some ISP, and uses
grex primarily just for text-mode internet access, and is not going to pay
both. Grex is better than an ISP, you can browse faster. I am talking to
him right now (using my ISP connection to access grex).
nharmon
response 190 of 276: Mark Unseen   Dec 10 18:59 UTC 2005

Grex's telephone bill each month is around $45. This means that the dues
of 7-9 paying members is used in providing the incoming dial-in access.
If Grex were to eliminate the modems and dial-in access and one or two
people stopped being paid members as a result, Grex would actually have
more money left over each month.

response 191 of 276: Mark Unseen   Dec 10 19:14 UTC 2005

I thought that staff used the dial-in access in some trouble-shooting.
Does staff no longer have a need for this?

I also suspect that more than "one or two" people would drop out without
modem access. Remember that if that is all they have, then they aren't here
to make their views known.

I would be happy with just one modem. So, I suspect, would willann (who keeps
asking me why his mail is not working), wlevak, davel, and some other people
who don't post in bbs but use grex for email. It has been about a month now
that these people can't use grex, and some can't access the internet at home
either. My 'free ISP' (WCC) is subject to frequence stalls and slowdowns and
I would much rather dial grex directly so I can see what I am typing in real
time. If you get the modems going, wlevak can finish setting up the 33.3K
bank, using info from the net.

Without modem access, I can't get my Grex email. Don't tell me about
ssh and other things my iMac doesn't support.

We promised modem access to Grex. We aren't delivering. Why not?

Your iMac doesn't support ssh? It should. What about telnet?

response 198 of 276: Mark Unseen   Dec 11 21:40 UTC 2005

What operating system does your iMac have? If you have OSX, you have ssh.
Open Terminal and then Connect to Server (under File). It is *pretty*
self evident after that.

Grex got rebooted after a crash today. While there I made backups
of the /a, /c, /bbs, /etc and /var/mail parititons, and stuffed them
onto a DVD. Not a complete backup of the entire system, but all the
important changing parts. Fits onto one DVD, too.

The crash (last two, actually) have been releated to soft depends,
the system that delays file updates and speeds file I/O. I think
we're going to turn that off for the moment.

I didn't have time to work on the modei at this time. I was
home sick today which is how I managed to get to provide in time
to do this.
