That's one reason I'm not getting mine done (aside from the fact that my eye
doctor doesn't think it'd be very spectacular -- I *might* be able to wear
glasses only to see ... hmmmm... ) I already have scars on my corneas and
retina from the oxygen in my incubator, so I don't need any more!

I am waiting for the rings that the FDA finally approved. Does not comprimise
the corneas, and does not cause scar. Plus they are very adjustable. I heard
last that there are $3,000/ eye. Not getting much hype but I want those
instead!!!!

I don't like wearing contacts. 1. I can feel them, 2. I would have to special
order mine 3. If I actually let the lame idiot doctor to go with something
"close" they tend to pop out. 4. They do not help me with I have allergies

Mmm. I can't have contacts, either. My doctor says they wouldn't really work
well for my levels of astigmatism/near-sightedness, so I am stuck with what
I've got. Glasses. At least I can see a good deal of the time. :-)

Well, I've got contacts, but I'd much rather not have to deal with
those or glasses. At some point I want some sort of fix... but it's
going to have to wait. My dad has LASIK (I think) and his isn't
healing that well, and the vision improvement isn't *that* great.

Jiff, the implantable rings (InTacs, I believe) are an exceptional
solution, as they can be removed without damage in most cases if the surgery
is totally botched, but it only corrects a small range of vision at present.
If you have to special-order your contacts, it probably won't work.

My vision is great, though I may need glasses for night driving (just to
make out street signs and such). I am ok vision-wise because the
scarring is not in places that affects vision. But the idea of scars in
my eyeballs freaks me the hell out. And I do NOT want any more slicing
on my eyes!

I would have been happy with contacts, until my eyes decided to react
horribly any time I kept them in over an hour. :(

I'm a little leary on the whole elective eye surgery thing. My mom has
congenital glaucoma, and has had 4 eye surgeries, and only 1 of them was
laser. So I'm a little put off by the dangers of this...I can deal with my
glasses for a while. I do agree with Jenn about contacts. I didn't have to
special order when I tried them, but the feeling them and the dry eye effect
with allergies made having them impossible. That and my fear of touching my
eyes. {shudders} I remember it was RK (Radio Kartonomy) before it was Lasix.
So I'm just happy the way I am.

It also depends on the contacts. I love my soft, but when they tried to put
me into gas perms, it was the most awful thing. But the softs were worth
special ordering for my vision/stigmatism.

Of course, in the last couple of years, my vision has gotten better, and I've
lost most of my stigmatism. :)

The reason I have to special order them is because of the size of my eyes,
not due to my Rx. So, it is a sizing issue more than anything. Essentially
I will never be able to get disposable contact lenses.

Well, I have a tendancy to rub my eyes so that doesn't help anything.

I know three people who have had this surgery and all three of
them are having problems. Different doctors, same procedure.

I definitely would want assurances that I'd not have major problems -- I mean,
I'm close enough to legally blind NOW. Why would I risk getting worse... I
have problems enough with my eyes that I'd freak if I tried contacts (I stuck
a stick in there once when I was little -- under four...), even if they WOULD
work with my 'scrip (which my doctor says they won't).

response 186 of 691: Mark Unseen   Oct 18 18:32 UTC 2000

I've had my gas perms for years and have never really had any
problems. Getting used to them was annoying, but bearable. I got over
any problems I had sticking 'things' in my eyes.

Besides, they're cheaper in the long run than soft contacts. My last
set of contacts lasted nearly 4 years, if not slightly longer (my eyes
haven't been getting any worse lately).

Strange, because everyone I know who had it had NO problems with it
whatsoever. Even my optometrist had it done, by the same doctor who did
mine. One of the possible side effects is that you don't heal properly.
My body has a tendency to heal itself, but in the most roundabout way
possible.

I'm ok with everything as long as I don't lose my vision! Aagh!

response 188 of 691: Mark Unseen   Oct 18 19:42 UTC 2000

just noting that my opthamologist is iffy on it...I tend to trust them more
than optomestrists. Optometrists do great for lenses and glasses and
fittings, much better than the opthamologists, but for eye questions or
surgery questions, I'd go to the opthamologists.

I am really super bummed. There's this girl I don't like (for a number of
reasons, really unrealated to the story) who lives in the dorm room next to
us. And it turns out that her roommate, and my roomate, who we both get along
well with, are conspiring to make us get along even worse. Both her roommate
and my roomate tell me things about her, and I _know_ they're telling her
untrue things about me.

And generally, this is all so silly and 6 year old behavior, and I'm trying
to stay above it, but the part that's really making me mad is that these girls
have no reason to behave so meanly to _either_ of us, and it just makes me
mad and upset that these girls are behaving this way for the fun of it.

And it also upsets me because then I start getting all paranoid-- if I have
done nothing to either of these girls and they sit around plotting how to make
my life generally unpleasant, then how do I know everyone else isn't doing
the same thing? Which is silly and irrational, but I just get upset like that,
and worry about irrational things like that.

Also, since these were the people I was really starting to like and get to
know here at school, I'm back to having no friends and no one to talk to who
lives within an hour of me. :(

This may sound silly, but I've been crying on and off all day because I had
a very realistic dream in which my mother died. While I was mourning her (in
the dream), she called me and said she hadn't really died...she'd just been
in a coma. It was still very sad since I hate the idea of her dying badly
enough...I didn't want to to go through it, even in a dream. Feh.

Stupid dreams.

So now I'm going to call her and cherish her voice. =)

My dad visited the hospital today. Nothing serious, but it's part of what's
been an ongoing problem. I'm amazed he can keep his head up like this.

Jiff... do water or cranberry juice. But not that Ocean Spray stuff,
which has like 10% juice. Go to a health food place and get the real
thing. Cranberry will help send the bacteria on its way. :)

We won't hear the results of the biopsy until next week. She's had
fatigue, joint pain/swelling, nosebleeds and outrageously high liver
enzymes for awhile. All we know is it's not hepatitis.

okay, uhm... I have been drinking TONS of water and cranberry juice.... like
to the point that I almost ended up in ER for messing up my electrolytes
(again).

I'm going to a friends house this weekend, and that'll be fun, but the lizard
<fat tailed gekko> that I gave as a present to one of my friends died today.
Unfortunatly. She was over 2 years old, on her way to three, but she just
fell sick and wouldn't eat, wouldn't drink, and had blood coming out of her
mouth. It's really sad. They really loved the lizard. It used to arch it's
tail and culr when you rubbed it's back like a cat. So we're having a funeral
today.

Also, I'm going away, and through the hard times this week, the ones who have
kept me sane, in addition to my friends, are my kitties. I'm gonna miss them
this weekend.

I know it sounds kinda lame, but hey. It bums me.
