Telnet-based BBS systems in general have experienced far less traffic in the
last few years thanin the heydey, about 5-10 years ago. There are exceptions
out there, but unfortunately, this BBS has been following the trend.

A couple of responses to Mike/lionfish ::  first, I hope you'll
peek in at the music conference, which is still pretty lively at times.

A good way to handle a big old conference is with the commands to
browse or read responses since a certain date:
"browse since mm/dd" and "read since mm/dd"

Thanks Ken, I didn't realise u could use the "since" command at the Ok:
prompt. + I'll try to get lots of my friends to use BBS's - although i can
c why http etc have taken ov... a few links is a lot more user friendly. but
this is more fun! :-] (oops nearly forgot the nose in that smiley)... cyall!

You can also do "fixseen all" (or maybe "fix all" or "fix seen all"),
which marks ALL items as read. That allows you to instantly "catch up"

Mike/lionfish :: all of the conferences/discussion forums on Grex
are also available through the web interface, so your friends don't
have to use clunky old telnet to participate. Grex's web page
is at http://www.cyberspace.org

response 180 of 287: Mark Unseen   Oct 22 16:12 UTC 2000

You can also read and participate in Grex's BBS through http. There's a
program called Backtalk that interfaces with PicoSpan and enables web
users to read the conferences. If they have an account, they can also
log in and participate.

Just go to http://www.cyberspace.org/cgi-bin/bt to test it out

Hi I'm Steve and I am new to Grex, but I have been involved with the industry
for years (1960's if anyone remembers blue boxes). But that was a long time
ago. Now I enjoy flying planes sailing and the occasional program.

Hmm... would the real Steve Wozniak have a cable modem? No, I think he'd have
ADSL or a T1 or something.

Of course, "lotus" isn't Steve Wozniak.

He's Steve Wozniac.

Thanks for all the advice + stuff. I'll try it out later. At the moment both
my PCs r lying in peices across the desk,+ i'm writing this on my 486 (14inch)
screen. I'm trying to get a network between my K^ and 486, but i've had sooo
many IRQ problems both pcs r full of cards (PCTV cards 3dg card + VGA card)
2 modems both ISA (annoying) - anyone else telnetting from a computer whicch
is spread across half a room? :-] i need to get it all fixed up by tommorow
so my sis can do her history course work... + I've actually Backed up my HD
- very unusual for me :) anyway: Hope everyon'es enjoying the half-term in
England + the number of shops which already have christmas decorations up is
scary :) - back to work!

Time (GMT): 11:48pm Status: Stressed!
Subject: HELP!
I've looked around grex for a computery problem forum, but can't find one...
there's Garage, but that's for grex stuff. So until someone can point me the
right way, I'll just have to post here :) I've wired up my 2 computers. The
Network cards can talk to each other (i've done a diagnostics program thing).
Now i need to get the "Client for Microsoft working@ with PTC/IP. I can't even
see the local computer in the Network neighbourhood... so can anyone give me
a URL or something to a resource that might help me understand... TY. + I
understand that these 2 posts r very out of topic so i'll understand if anyone
wants to yell at me. I'm going to sleep now. In the morning i'll be expecting
lots of helpful replys :-] TY for ur patience! :-] normally i'd post on a
newsgroup somewhere but my normal PC (the K6) hasn't a modem and the 486
hasn't the software...extcuses excuses...
cya all!

First bit of advice: Join the Micros conference. Enter

        j micros

at the next Ok: prompt you see.

Second bit of advice: don't use Windows. (OK, so I still use NT on at least
one of my machines.)
ric
response 191 of 287: Mark Unseen   Oct 25 00:55 UTC 2000

Another piece of advice: type "e" at the Ok: prompt in order to entier a NEW
item about a topic.

response 192 of 287: Mark Unseen   Oct 25 03:59 UTC 2000

Better yet, go to (in this case) micros, and continue an existing item.

help conf gives one a list of Grex conferences.

You may also find cyber.cf an interesting conference.
