Replaces, at least in my experience.

When I tried to dial in, just now, the modem connected but there was no
visible response whatever. Three or four attempts produced the same
trivial result.

I've been having the same trouble as Grace all day. Seems like maybe the
terminal server is toast.

I have this trouble frequently. I can't find a pattern, but moving up and
down the dial-in lines by using a different number seemse to help sometimes.
Other times, I just dial in to UM and telnet over.

Whoops, mentioned it in the wrong item. :)
Same problem, all day. I just know two numbers, and cannot get in either way.
I also cannot telnet in. (grump)

I was wondering where Grex went. I could not get into the
dial-ins since yesterday noontime. I got disconnected and thoght
it was major down time for Grex.

Right. I tried several of Grex's numbers but couldn't get the terminal
server to respond.

Hell, a "quick boot" would have been a sofware reset from my desk at work.
I had to wait and then drive to the Pumpkin and yank the power to get it
reset.

By "downloading" I meant "Windows clipboard transfer". The
accomplished transfer (the portion which was e-mailed) was
somewhere in the 900 byte range. The total intended transfer
was estimated to be in the 23 to 25 hundred byte range. Next
time I'll invoke the editor.

You might also try smaller pieces at a time. Say, twenty or thirty lines.
