Our very existence contravenes your suggestion that Grex does not believe
in online communications. However, the management/oversight of our
organization is better served by a higher level of communication in the
decision making process than is presently available remotely without
current technological and financial resources.

Re #171: It's possible to believe in online communication without
believing it's ideal for every situation. (I believe that screwdrivers
are useful, but I do not use them to hammer nails.)

For example, I communicate online a lot, so I suppose I "believe in
it." But I've also seen long, bitter online arguments solved by a few
minutes of face-to-face conversation, or in some cases even telephone
conversation. There's just no substitute for the emotional feedback
you get from seeing the other person's face or hearing their voice.
Online it's just too easy to forget that the other person has feelings,
or to mistake their tone of voice for something other than it is. In
general people tend to seem colder and more sarcastic online, which
leads to a lot of unnecessary defensiveness.

I couldn't agree more with #177. Well put.

There are some people (autistic, etc.) who do better communicating via one
sense at a time. The sensory overload of face to face communication is too
much for them to handle. They have trouble dealing with the words and the
emotions at the same time.

Do you really believe that personality issues do not matter?

One Fortune 500 company I worked for had a very harsh VP. He stepped on too
many toes, and was escorted out by security one day after stepping on the
wrong toes.

Build your platform, then. Be *concrete* and explain how you are an asset.

re #180 Are you suggesting that jp2 is autistic? That might explain
some things...

re #176
> Now, I would like to know if someone can explain what makes Grex so
> special that the same management techniques that companies like IBM,
> Microsoft, GM, and others use to run their business cannot work here.

Well, now. I suppose that if you had actually *read* what you are
claiming to be responding to, you have noticed the part about "our
current technological and financial resources" determining the parameters
within which we will meet. I did not suggest that remote meeting would
be impossible if we had the resources of the megacorps you use as
examples.

re # 185 The supposed 'logic' behind your suggestion for joint
memberships has in earlier discussions proven so thoroughly deficient
that it is not even worth further response.

Jamie, I have to say that I do hope you will continue to voice your
opinions on Grex, as that is the surest possible way to assure that you
will never have any significant impact upon our policy or management
practices, except possibly to reinforce our perceptions of the decisions
we have made as being the correct ones.

I suppose you would be willing to cover the cost of a portable 100Mbps
real-time, full-screen videoconferencing setup? I'd like to see that.

True. And I have kept my mouth shut for a while now. First off, Jamie is
a friend of mine - but even I take him with a grain of salt. Yes, he's
pompous and at times, obnoxious. But I think you are overlooking the good
things he could bring to the table. I thought he had some great ideas - I
would love if I could pay one fee and be a member of both grex and m-net.
They are such wildly diverse systems - just as your board would be diverse
if you actually looked at Jamie as a serious contender. It's not all bad,
people.

I think the main difference between grex and m-net is that on the latter
everyone seems to be calling everyone else an ass. Can they all be right?
