rather than give these guys t-shirts which they probably wont wear since
they dont use grex regularly anyway-- why doesnt grex make a donation to
the ACLU. Raise $50 bucks say, and then have Grex match it, for a total
$100 donation. Which I assume would be tax-deductible.

Thats not a bad idea, but thats more of a gift to the organization as
a whole. I thought this thank you was more towards the laywers themselves,
such that a Grex T-shirt makes more sense.

(I really don't see how you think the ACLU 'used' us. Having been
at the hearing, I think I can say that it was a partnership.)

these lawyers are committed to the ACLU so they would probably
appreciate monetary contributions to their defense fund as opposed
to t-shirts. But ask what they prefer.

Nah, you don't ask someone which gift they want before you give it to them,
unless you're afraid they really won't like one of the options.

   I think they'd appreciate--and wear--them.

John - so what you're saying is it's only okay to donate money for something
when it's for Grex? I appreciate what the lawyers did, and even if they don't
wear the t-shirts, they'll appreciate the gesture, Richard.

re resp:15, yes, put me down for $10.

The <AOL> thing has to do with AOL's reputation for attracting
the clue-challenged. Especially when AOL first got Usenet
access, it was quite common for them to quote a whole Usenet
post, then add "me too" (or some other one-line response) at
the bottom. Hey, I use AOL, I can make fun of 'em... :P

Christmas must be very different in the Conger family. In my family,
for some reason, everyone is expected to make up a long list of the
things they want.

Maybe grex should have a "gift fund" (like the silly hat fund or the spare
parts fund) for giving gifts to people who the board thinks deserve it? or
maybe we should get them silly hats?

response 27 of 38: Mark Unseen   Aug 5 08:02 UTC 1999

Yeah, but as Mark said, making a list takes the fun out of it. Plus, it
wouldn't be a surprise.

Re #25: Yeah, we don't do that in my family, I'm afraid. But there's still
a difference between that and what richard suggested. If you ask someone to
make a list and then you pick from it, they can still be a bit surprised.
but if you say, "would you rather have a power drill or a saber saw", then
they have a pretty good idea what they'll be getting. :)

I kind of like the idea of Grex Silly Hats. If someone wants to come
up with plans for one and make a presentation to the board, we'll listen. ;-)

So, would the donations to the "Buy the ACLU Lawyers a T-Shirt" be
temporarily placed in the Silly Hat Fund, or would we have to create the
"Buy the ACLU Lawyers a T-Shirt Fund"?
aruba
response 31 of 38: Mark Unseen   Aug 7 17:22 UTC 1999

Dunno. I do think that this is a good use of the Silly Hat Fund, though, if
the board authorizes it. Lets see how much money gets gonated, and we'll
decide from that.

if money *does* get 'gonated,' does that mean it will be able to reproduce
on its own?

response 33 of 38: Mark Unseen   Aug 9 22:13 UTC 1999

Opps. Wouldn't *that* be a trick. :)

I'm back in town.

Though Grex doesn't give memberships away, it is perfectly possible for
to donate money to Grex to purchase some third party a membership.
Still, I think a T-shirt is a nicer gift.

The following attorney's were involved:

Andy Nickelhoff - lead attorney - did all the talking in the hearing.

Marshall Widick - assisting Andy - did a lot of the preparation for
    the suite.

Michael Steinberg (mikes@grex.org) - attended a board meeting to brief
us, served as a liaison throughout. Legal director of the
    ACLU of Michigan.

  J. C. Salyer (jcs@grex.org) - recruited plaintiffs, made some
postings on Grex. Staff attorney from National ACLU.

There was an attorney who flew in from New York to advise on the
hearing, but I've forgotten his name. It might have been J. C. Salyer.
Did any of the others who attended the hearing have a better memory than
I did?

Andy and Marshall are with Sachs, Waldman, O'Hare, Helveston, Bogas &
McIntosh. We could probably send stuff to them at the law firm's
address, which shouldn't be hard to obtain. I don't have addresses for
the rest. Probably not hard to figure out with a little research.

Four T-shirts is about $72 - depending a bit on the size and color.

My impression was that size Large would work for all the people I met,
but some people like their shirts baggier.

  J. C. Salyer (jcs@grex.org) - recruited plaintiffs, made some
    postings on Grex

I think I heard the attorney who flew in from New York introduced as J.
C. Salyer, but there was other talking going on at the time, and I may
have heard incorrectly. However, Salyer is based in New York, so if the
attorney did fly in from there, it was probably Salyer.

I like the concept of giving t-shirts to these folks.

Hmmm - I thought I heard a name different from J.C. Salyer, but I confess I
don't remember it either.

I vaguely remember "Terry" but that may have been a blurred version of
"J C". I don't know.
