I am happy (and very grateful) that today I learned that a lump under each
arm is *not* cancer.

That's great, katie. I'm thrilled that my glasses came in today. I'm looking
through a different pair of specs for the first time in four years. It's
weird, but it's worth it.

As some of you know, I've been corresponding with my birth mother since early
January (there are items in Winter and Spring Agora about it). Years after
she gave me up, she had another child. Cheryl is white, and the father was
black, so Cherelle is black (and very very adorable). Cherelle turned 8 on
September 4th and is now in the second grade. Cheryl explained that I was
Cherelle's half-sister and gave her a bunch of pictures of me.
Here is an excerpt from yesterday's letter. It made me cry. =)
<snip>
'Last Friday, Cherelle had show-and-tell. She took the family pictures with
her. She showed everybody your picture and explained that not all kids have
to be the same color to be family or to get along. I was so proud of her.
Her teacher was crying!'
<snip>
It was really cool to find out I had a sister, but it's even cooler to see
how smart she is. ;-)

This "black" and "white" thing is really crazy. Why should the offspring
of a "black" and a "white" be considered either just "black" or "white"?
Putting up with this abominable custom just perpetuates it. (This is
a generic rant and not directed at what any specific people believe they
need or have to do - they have to deal with it in their own ways.)

Slaveholders, Rane. Who were, presumably, ignorant of the fact that
under any reasonable biological standard, races don't exist and we're all
originally form Africa at some point.

No, Cheryl is not Italian.

I'm not from Africa. I'm from Missouri. I've never even been to Africa.
You DID provide the matter in the form of a proof, birdy, as if it went
without saying that the child of a black parent and a white parent would be
black. *shrug* *I* knew what you meant, but these things need to be spelled
out for Rane. ;}

By some people's difinition, if the father is black then the children"from"
him are also black. Whatever. We are all multi racial, deal.

<laughs> Generally I hear the term 'biracial' used in such a
circumstance... Heh, I have two cousin Sara(h)s and one is biracial
black/white and the other is Lebaneze/white.... both are absolutely
beautiful.
Okay, no point to that response... just meandering thoughts.

I'm really happy because I just got back from the Roches concert at Green
Wood. Wow! They rock. Well, they don't exactly, but they are wonderful
performers and exceedingly cool people. It was a treat and a pleasure to see
them and speak with them.
