The response through Backtalk is a bit quicker, but still very much
slower than it was last week.

ummmm, instead of trying to balance all the above compalints
against the maximum-pty load that is humanly tolerable,
just drop al of the dozen that were added.
quit trying everyone's patience tweaking us to our limit of hospitality.

I agree. There appear to be the "technicians", that always want to milk
the system for everything possible, and the "diplomats", that want a
friendly and easy to use environment. I'm with the diplomats.

I think the current configuration is working well. Usually one seems to be
able to add ptys for a while without much performance impact, until suddenly
adding a few more suddenly makes the system a whole lot worse. We want to
be just comfortably below that breaking point. The only way to find it is
by trial and error.
This system is not about providing optimal performance to a small group of
people. It's about providing acceptable performance to as many people as we
can. ISP's deliver reliably good performance to their customers by having
lots of excess capacity. I don't believe that should be Grex's approach.
A discussion of this basic philosophical point would probably belong in
the coop conference (conf:coop).

Let me just say that Gres has been much easier to use since when I first
became aquainted with it four years ago. It also helped to restart my acct
after I hadn't been on for half a year, very good.

The 1997 Grex Board of Directors election begins December
1 and runs through December 15. At stake are four open
positions on the board for two-year terms of office
starting on January 1, 1998.
For information about the election, or to cast a vote,
type "vote" at a Unix shell prompt or "!vote" at most other
prompts. (This won't work until midnight though -- I'm
posting this response on November 30.)
There's a web page with election information at URL
http://www.cyberspace.org/cgi-bin/pw/voting-booth
but you can't actually cast a vote via the web yet. (I
expect this to change in a few days.)

And if you want to make your vote count, you still have time to become a
member of Grex. Type !support for info on how to do so.

Makes fun reading. If you're clueless about what staff does, it paints an
interesting picture of an often boring job. IMO, anyway.

Re #168: Dave, if you want a more accurate picture of the status of auction
money, type "!query summary". All the data about which items are paid for
is online. Type "!query" to see all the queries you can do.

Don't forget that the annual Grex Board of Directors election
is underway. Eight excellent Grexers are running for four open
seats. Polls close at midnight December 15. You can vote (or
just get more info about the election) by typing !vote at the
next prompt.
Also, you can now vote via the web. Just go to grex's main page:
http://grex.cyberspace.org
and follow the "voting booth" link.
If you vote and then change your mind later, you can always
re-vote -- your latest vote replaces any previous one. So vote
early and often!
Anybody can vote, but only the votes of Grex members in good
standing will be counted in determining the outcome.
