I'm tired. Extrememly. And last night, my computer is giving me grief. Lots
of grief. Here I am being nice, giving it a whole new hard drive, and it's
booting up slower than my mom's old 486 laptop. Damn Compaq, and damn me for
accepting one. My lovely Quantum Bigfoot TX is grunting, but I hope that I
can fix this thing. I stayed up until midnight trying to get it back up.
Why don't I just replace the bigfoot with the new lovely 30 GB harddrive?
Because my dvd software and others came preinstalled, so if you want them,
you have to have a hard drive the same size of the installed one. So my 30
gb would become 8gb, and then I'd be in the same fix as before. So suffer
shall I... I don't even want to think about installing the new network
card...that's the other treat for this evening.

(my hard drive crashed last night while editing music... *before* I
had a chance to begin my homework. I've been running Scandisk for DOS
since 3am [Windows wouldn't boot]. I *hate* having to approve every fix.
I missed all of my classes today. My show's pre-recorded, so I don't
have to worry about that, but, geez, I don't want to spend the rest of
the night running Scandisk to fix errors.)

(the funny thing is, the hard drive's partitioned. D: is fine; it's C:
that's hosed.)

Leslie and I woke up this morning and agreed to cancel out this weekend's
opera trip to Chicago. Last weekend we drove to Kalamazoo twice
for Leslie's rehearsals and performances, and next weekend Leslie
is driving to Muncie for a singing competition. We felt like we
needed some downtime, and this weekend's opera, Verdi's RIGOLETTO,
was the most expendable of this year's Chicago operas.

That's my favorite opera.

response 154 of 202: Mark Unseen   Nov 6 20:01 UTC 2000

Yes, but we've seen it several times: most of the operas we go to
Chicago for, we've never seen before: Harbison's GREAT GATSBY,
Tchaikovsky's QUEEN OF SPADES, Janacek's JENUFA, Verdi's ATTILA.
In general, Chicago Lyric runs a much more adventurous program
than Michigan Opera Theatre in Detroit.
(And I should get back to reviews in the Opera item in the
Music/Classicalmusic conferences...)

Does sound pretty "adventurous" programming.

My day has been fab, portabello panini rocks.
I've decided to get a turtle.
I have Friday off.
And I'm meeting with the music prof tonight.
Life is wonderful.

(just got back from Yet Another Trivia Competition. going in, there
were teams that feared my name, knowing that my team wins about half the
ones I enter. we made a good showing, taking the top score for both
preliminary rounds, but when it came time for qualifying, we were twice a
question away, only to let it slip through our buzzers. goodbye, $200.)

A "power event" here at work. Minding my own business, suddenly the power
dies. Tuns out a high voltage line was down right outside our office; we
could see the ends sparking and making little flames where they touched the
ground. An hour later, and we're back up. Damn, I wanted more non-computer
time. ;)

I found a five-pence piece in the change on my dresser today. At first,
I thought it was a Canadian dime, since it was of approximately the
right size and color to be a dime, just brighter. Closer examination
revealed my error. I wonder where I got it? I suppose some cashier is
happy s/he passed it along before having to explain how s/he accepted it
in the first place. And I'm glad to have it.

(Thanksgiving Day was interesting, to say the least. after failing for
the umpteenth night in a row to fall asleep before midnight, I packed
up the car and left for Ann Arbor around 8:30am, about 2.5 hours later
than my plan C. instead of making the left in Harvey, I travelled further
south in a vain attempt to avoid most of the lake effect snow. dunno how
effective *that* was, considering the squishy-squishy slush zone I hit
just south of Munising.)

(about two hours into the drive, just before I hit US-2, my eyes feel like
they're going to glue themselves shut. I pull into one of the roadside
parks and nap for about an hour, at which time I was awoken by a caravan
of hyperactive kids and rah-rah parents on their way to some sort of
football game [I'd know which one if I'd read the paper before leaving. I
recognized the school name, but don't recall it right now.]. I started up
the car and continued along US-2 just to the bridge, when my eyes begin
again to close like Georgia schools after a light snowfall. I pulled over
at the sightseeing area just north of the bridge and take another hour
nap. I drive for another hour until my eyes begin to shut like Japanese
subway car doors. I pull over at another rest area and sleep for about an
hour. after waking up, I call my little brother and tell him I'm running
late [it was just after 4pm, which was when I'd planned to be home] and
won't be there until 8pm or so. I get back into the car and suddenly
realize that I'd been wearing my older, more comfortable pair of
eyeglasses. I further realize that my eyelids weren't heavy befcause of
lack of sleep, but rather eye fatigue from driving with an old
prescription. thankfully, I have my newer set in the car, so I put those
on and drive the rest of the way home, no problem.)

(yesterday and today, I spent in Columbus. freedom and I had Indian food
for lunch, Pizzeria Uno's for dinner, and Chi Chi's for dessert, plus we
baked cookies. I also visited my grandmom & aunt & cousin, who's getting
bigger [he's 7 now]. now I'm in Ann Arbor, and I leave for East Lansing
in the morning.)

I'm back from a weekend in Champaign-Urbana, Illinios. It felt
good to go to a con again on Thanksgiving weekend. After reading Grex
bbs, I should be pretty sleeppy, what which only 4 hours of sleep last
night and the 7 hours drive today.

I'm moved in. I have a new address, new apartment with new carpeting. Big
thanks to Anne and Sylvia for helping, in addition to my family and some
extended family (friend's parents who kinda adopted me). I'm exausted. We
started truly loading stuff up at 12:30pm yesterday when the truck arrived.
I couldn't afford the deposit for a u-haul or ryder, so had a pickup truck,
trailer, and cars. Got all the furnature in the truck and trailer first load,
fishy tank and assorted other things in cars. Second truck trip was boxes
boxes boxes, boxes in cars, and assorted "God, she's got a lot of stuff!"
comments. Then it was down to my father, my step mom, Bernice, and I... And
we made another trip in the cars, loaded up, then it was Bernice and I, and
it was my bike, Christmas Tree box, and over to mom's to get the TV. Got to
my mom's at 10:45pm. Was completely out of the old place by 10pm (the rush
because my ex-roommate got off work at 10:30, but was being picked up by his
father as he has no transportation having wrecked his car last month.)

I'm having mixed emotions, partially I'm sure because I'm completely exausted
both emotionally and physically. I had wanted this to be a good parting.
Apparently I'm the ONLY one, and no I'm not suprised it didn't happen. His
two temper tantrums on the last two days I lived there were more than enough.
But the final straw was when he wanted to take my keyboard away and when I
wouldn't let him have it (story...bought a computer from him, he kept both
new and old keyboards until we moved in and he gave me one of the two... he
wanted the new one back, I said no, that both comptuers came with a keyboard,
and I was keeping one. Either the old one or the new one. he couldn't keep
both.) and then he proceeded to say "Fuck you. Fuck you bitch." and walked
away, and then scowled at me for the rest of the time he was there before his
father picked him up to take him to work (an hour and a half late no less).

I know it sounds dumb, but I really wanted and hoped to see the guy I first
met when I left. I had wanted to spend some time doing something fun, like
a movie or even just talking. We did that earlier in the week, and most of
the seperating was good. Up until the last week, and he kept mood swinging.
Mostly when I didn't let him get his way. I know it's an indication of what
he's like now, and I didn't give him my new address or phone or anything.
I like my new home and it's going to work out well. I want the best for him
too, not that he would ever believe it. He'll bitch and moan, if he can find
me (although he does know where I work) So now I have to unpack and figure
out how to get on with my life now without him. So I'm happy and I'm bummin
today.

I think it's for the best that you're out of there - he's clearly got
big problems, and there's nothing you can do to fix them. I'm glad you
were able to move out without anything worse happening.

(outrageous cookie bars are out of the oven and look *good*. I'll have
to start later this week on the rest of the cookies for the care packages
I'm sending out. there's the small matter of a term paper, two essays,
and 28000 words of "journal entries" to attend to first.)

Cooking with dry ice again, are you? I've heard of freezer burn, but
not usually in terms of "edible".

rather than helping Stouffers, Birds Eye, or Tios.

take-out & delivery.

Perhaps to appease the literallists in the cf, I should have sperated the
frozen cuisine from the pre-made cuisine. However, I did say in 167 "someone
else cooking"

(I'm at WUPX-Marquette. from the looks of things, no one's been here
for the past 24 hours. it's quiet. I haven't decided if I want to power
up the station or just head back home. I forgot to bring the stack of
blank tapes I'd bought earlier today along with me.)

(it's not so much cold outside as it is windy. I did spend several
minutes chipping ice off my car, but I don't know if that's because
of snow melting after I drove today, or if it was freezing rain.)

(I did do dishes today, for the most part. I also went grocery
shopping for the first time in a couple of weeks. while at the
store, I picked out two pints of Ben & Jerry's ice cream to take
home. I hadn't had B&J in over a year. when I started into a pint
this evening, I couldn't figure out why the Pistachio Pistachio wasn't
green.)
