Did I just lose my connection at noontime today or did Grex
lose it at noontime today?

I can't get to my mailbox on any of my grex accounts. They all say that I
don't have an inbox yet!.

Grex went down while I was online a couple hgours ago. Could that have done
something?

Colleen, I found a zero length inbox file yor you, so I deleted it. Incoming
email will recreate it.

"..get to my mailbox on any of my grex accounts."

Really? And how many does one need?

As is probably obvious, the network connection is down.

Is grex offline? There are three of us on right now and I cannot reach any
sites other than grex.

If by "offline" you mean that the Internet connection is down, then yes,
it was. It's back now.

Of course, it's gone down (and come back) since my last response.

Grex's ISP has determinted that Grex's DSL router isn't maintaining sync with
the DSL line. They've gotten to the point where they need some Grex staffer
to go to the Pumpkin and unplug the DSL router so Covad can test the line,
but I don't think any of the Ann Arbor based staff people have had time to
do that yet.

response 135 of 188: Mark Unseen   Nov 19 08:16 UTC 2000

Really? Grex's DSL router "isn't maintaining sync with the DSL line..."
says Grex's ISP. Well, guess what, I am on that DSL line as I type this
and it seems to be doing just fine. This sounds a lot like the time the
Ameritech tech wanted me to change my password to fix the problem... (an
'air gap' - an ameritech tech had cut my pairs.... not exactly a
'software problem' fixed by changing a password seems to me...)

Bottom line, it is likely that Grex and I have ultimately the same
vendor for 'DSL' or 'ADSL' 'line' as far as the under 'lie' -ing
hardware is concerned as there is really only one company, Ameritech,
that is allowed to run phone wire to your house, business, or other
establishment regardless of the ISP who bills you. Thus if there were
no major earthquakes or nuclear attacks in your area then connectivity
problems 'upstream' or 'downstream' (depending on your point of view)
really have to be 'routing' problems (most probably because of
Ameritech).

Look, this network stuff is really not all that 'rocket science'. Its
actually pretty more or less gormphy wabba nibble fardnob.
There is no secret, all you have to do is qwuib the bissle and then bob
your uncle and knob the main dab.

"Isn't maintaining sync"? Thats a major problem, uh huh.

Brian, with all due respect, you don't know what you're talking about.

No, DSL isn't rocket science. It does, however, involve the DSLAM and the
customer side router to sync to eachother at the speed programmed into the
DSLAM, and either equipment problems or copper pair problems can cause that
synchronization to fail, causing the DSL line to stop passing traffic.

It's up most of the time, but is going down occasionally. Even bdh can't pass
traffic over the DSL line when it's not passing traffic.

With a Covad, or Northpoint or Rhythms, DSL circuit, Ameritech does supply
the pair, but doesn't supply anything that could have "routing problems."

and the way we pass traffic can lead to a rather smelly internet.

Does any of the above explain why I haven't been able to dial in to Grex
in the past few days? Each time my modem reaches Grex it either tells me
there is no answer (meaning the Grex modem didnt "catch" with my modem) or
it discommects in a few seconds.

response 139 of 188: Mark Unseen   Nov 22 08:32 UTC 2000

No, whatever you're experiencing would be something completely separate.

response 141 of 188: Mark Unseen   Nov 28 14:26 UTC 2000

I got a call from Grace, late yesterday afternoon, saying she couldn't dial
in to Grex. I confirmed this by trying to dial in from here (work). I got
the message from the term server and then, maybe a couple of seconds later,
a disconnect. I tried telnetting in (which she couldn't), and got "connection
refused".

I see in the MOTD this morning:
Grex felt grumpy about telnet sessions today and didn't allow
them from about 4:14pm 'till 5:06pm (EST -0500) Monday. --STeve
Was this related to problems of dialins? (Hmm. The termserver basically
telnets to Grex after connecting, right?)

;-) Seriously, I think we have an interesting intermittant here,
which Ameritech is going to be looking at. I've seen even tiny
multi-second outages in the last week, lasting about 15 seconds.
