I had never had any board experience either prior to my first stint on
the Grex board. Had pretty extensive committee experience though, as
part of my job.

Voting starts December 1. That's four days from now.

There are two nominees who have neither accepted nor declined. I've
sent them mail indicating that they should affirmatively accept by Dec.
1 to appear on the ballot.

If you've voted in previous board elections, you know that the vote
program will display an "election statement" from each candidate. I've
emailed the candidates instructions on how to create a statement file.

Having never done this before, I find myself curious as to what folks
would like to see in an "election statement". What usually gets put
there?

I always look at these statements to see what qualifications the
candidate has, what ideas they have about how things should be run, what
kind of services we should provide, what group or groups of people we
should be targeting, and/or any other things that might distinguish one
candidate from any other.

That's not to say that that's what usually gets put there, though it
sometimes is.

In regards to the 'never having been on the Board' thread... While I've
never been on this Board, or really any other, I have assisted with
several Board type structures in my various temporary assignments. I
personally don't think experience is the most important factor here.
Willingness to work, ability to work with other Board members to get
things done fairly smoothly, and other such concepts would seem to me
to be most important. I think whoever gets on the Board shouldn't see
it as a dreary duty, but something they very much look forward to doing.

And now I think I'll go work on my statement...

Although I'd find Steve's suggested style of statement quite helpful a
good one doesn't have to follow any type of formal outline. Mostly, I'd
like to see how the candidates stand on the most basic of concepts, like
open access even when Michigan law is pushing us toward verification, Free
Speech even when the content is very uncomfortable, low-key donation based
fundraising even if that means we stay frugal, etc. Too, how would you
vote on an issue if you disagreed with the member/user consensus?

My statement is still in my directory: /a/m/a/mary/statement
But I should warn you, I lost. ;-)

Okay, the polls are now open for the Board election. They'll close at
the end of the day (Eastern Standard Time) on December 15. You can view
the candidates' statements and/or cast a ballot in two ways:

(1) From a telnet or direct-dial connection, type "vote" or "!vote",
    depending on your prompt.

(2) From the web, open the URL

        http://www.cyberspace.org/cgi-bin/pw/voting-booth

You can vote as many times as you want; each vote erases the previous
one.

Hmm. It seems to have let me vote, even though I'm not a member.
Did I miss something?

You can run the program if you're not a member, but your vote doesn't count.

response 137 of 167: Mark Unseen   Dec 1 13:07 UTC 1999

That's correct. Anyone can vote, but only members' votes are counted.

response 138 of 167: Mark Unseen   Dec 1 14:03 UTC 1999

Aren't non-member votes counted anyway? I recall there being such statistics
in previous elections. Non-member votes don't affect election results,
though.

Out of curiousity, are you only allowed to vote for one person, even if there
are three people being chosen for this election? (As long as you aren't
voting for the same person 3 times, that is...:)

response 140 of 167: Mark Unseen   Dec 1 15:07 UTC 1999

Never mind....I'm being a bit stupid...I could actually *pay attention* to
the vote program, which would of course, answer my question...:)

Re resp:138 - I meant that non-member votes don't "count" in the sense
of influencing the outcome. You're right, I do report the non-member
totals, for informational purposes.

Yes, you can vote for fewer than maximum number of slots. (If you try
to vote for more, the program catches it and gives you an error
message.)

When I asked about "experience", I didn't necessarily mean in a board -- a
committee or work group at one's employment or club is "similar". Also, I
explicitly said, "or of frequent board mtg attendance as a spectator," which
I expect many of you sho said "I had no prior experience" had done. *sigh*

i regret to report that it doesn't look like i'll be able to attend this
month's board meeting due to a rehearsal for nutcracker in which i'll have
to fill in for someone else who will be out of town. (maybe...)

Out of curiousity, are the polls open until midnight on the 15th? I didn't
know if you guys would shut it down early to have results for the meeting that
night.

I only found statements by four of the seven candidates, which would lead me
to assume (am I correct?) that the other candidates are not all that
interested in whether they are elected. (I will make an exception for Marcus,
who is probably busy doing more important things for grex already).
