Response to Sara Watson Arthurs, talking of what we are(n't) - just incase
anyone's confused, I am not REALLY a fish... - just want to clear that up.
+ scary - it sounds like i'm going to be on this for at least the next 5 years
- although at uni - i'll probably be connected via a 286 laptop :-]
gotta go and try and dig up a copy of MSDos v6.2 + while i'm on the subject
does anyone know how to make the root directory on your HD look like it should
be booted from - i've copied all the files off my bootdisk etc and it doesn't
think it's a book disk. - I'm about to install win 95 on the 486 - and i
didn't realise win95 didn't come with a bootdisk - obvious -who would supply
a boot disk with an operating system???! sigh!

re 125:

Mike, you need to format the HD with the /s option, which tells format to load
system files.

Mike, you should take a look at item:14 in this conference,
"Heritage Computer Questions." There's ongoing discussion there of
working with vintage equipment.

RE#120 -- Sara, in what part of NoCal do you live?

Being a bootable disk is more than just having the right files in the
root directory (indeed, it really has nothing to do at all with what's
in the root directory, or even *if* there's a root directory). The
important thing is what's on block 0 of the disk -- in IBM PC compatible
terms, the "MBR" or master boot record. For an IBM disk, that in turn
contains not just the primary bootstrap code, but also the partition
table. The primary bootstrap code is generally just smart enough to
figure out which partition is "bootable", and to load the 1st block from
that partition -- the secondary boot record. In the case of Microsoft
Dos (and windows) that code, in turn, is just smart enough to load the
new few bits of Dos in -- those are generally "io.sys" and "msdos.sys"
which also appear in the root directory, however, at least in older
versions of dos, the secondary boot strap code doesn't actually look in
the root directory, it just "knows" where these files live, because
that's where they were put by "format.com" which also wrote out the
secondary boot strap code. At that point, there's additional logic in
"io.sys" to read through config.sys, which is the only file that has to
be in the root directory (for ms-dos.) After that, io.sys will load in
command.com (from the root directory, but it can be changed with a line
in config.sys), which then reads autoexec.bat. In windows 3.1, it was
common to invoke windows from autoexec.bat. In windows 95, autoexec.bat
is gone and the logic in io.sys invokes windows directly instead of
running command.com. Windows goes through its own initialization
sequence after that, but isn't usually very chatty about what it's
doing.

(and format /s will put command.com and io.sys where the mbr expects them...)

And the DOS "sys" command should be able to make a floppy bootable even if
it wasn't formatted that way originally.

As long as the first two directory entries on the disk are empty.

I think the newer dos boot records are actually smart enough to scan the
directory for IO.SYS and MSDOS.SYS. Dos 6 certainly seems to behave
this way. The error logic is still basically non-existant...

Thanks for all the help i've partioned my 486's hd from a very small 500Mb
into 2 very very small partions + The deal with the boot up sequence - i get
it now: The files io.sys etc have to be in the first sector of the HD, this
is unlikely to happen if i just copy them there. I ran the sys command on my
c drive which copies the files into this first, boot sector - all sorted TY!
