Isn't it the case that to invoke a program in .forward, you put in a line such
as "|<path/program>" ? Is that in fact how you invoke procmail? If it's
your own program, will it also have to be world readable?

Well, on the group thing, I know that on all systems I've worked with, you
can't put a file into a group without being a member of that group yourself.
So you'd have to put EVERYONE on the system in group 'forward' so the file
can be created that way, provide explicit instructions to chgrp the files to
'forward', and then deal with 'Why isn't my .forward working' about 2
badzillion times. Or have a cron job that changes them and eats (amazingly)
massive amounts of CPU and disk time. Not to mention, you don't gain anything
over world-readable, since everyone can now read them anyway.

On the procmail question, yes, you use | in .forward to send it to a process.
I suspect that if it's your own program it has to be world EXECUTABLE, as does
the directory hierarchy it's in; doesn't have to be readable, though.

And c'mon, what's so hard or bad about having .forward files readable? On
most systems (haven't checked grex, but my gut is that it isn't changed)
finger will show where it forwards to, and you cna always get mail to that
forwarding address by using the local one, so there's little if any privacy
concern involved.

I, too, don't see the problem with having a world readable .forward. Grex
is not about hiding things. If you really don't want people to know your
other email address, read mail on grex.

I have completed putting together a 501(c)3 application for Grex. The "good
parts" version is posted in coop for one last round of discussion before we
launch it off to the IRS.

It also appears sendmail does not .forward messages right back to the host
from whence they came. Perhaps this is a good thing, since it might avoid
bounce loops. But it is another *unannounced* thing... :-(

I'd like to announce that version 2.0 of the Wizard in Training Grex handbook
is hot off the presses. For those of you who have waited a long time for me
to send you one, I apologize and thank you for your patience. You should get
your copy within a few days. (They will go out tomorrow.)

BTW - what was that 'locations' item about, anyway?

about #133...
I'd like to see this handbook.
Is it possible to put it on the web?

Grex is currently in the process of preparing its application for 501c3
tax exempt status. A draft version of our 501c3 application is now on the
web at:

                http://www.cyberspace.org/local/grex/501c3.html

This will go to the board on Wednesday to have the wording approved. If you
have any comments or suggestions on the application, there is an item
discussing in in the coop conference. Thanks.

Re #136: I'm sorry I didn't see your post earlier, Luca. Right now the
handbook only exists as a PageMaker document, so it's not only
unreadable to most people but also quite huge. Making an HTML or
text version would be helpful, I think, but a lot of work, and it'd be
hard to maintain two versions. If anyone would like to volunteer to
help with that, that would be great.

janc .. thankxx for the time & effort onthe 501c3 app... i know what
work that is.

also, anticipate a rejection as well as a minor re-write session and
resubmission. consider these events as typical, not personal.

Hmmm... PageMaker doesn't seem to give me an option to save the file in any
other format. I will check with my PageMaker expert when next she's awake,
however.

re #144: did you check for an "export" command or were you just looking
under "Save As"? I'm not a pagemaker expert -- it's entirely conceivable
that it doesn't support writing any file formats but its own but that seems
odd for a program with so many features..
aruba
response 146 of 147: Mark Unseen   Jun 6 05:56 UTC 1998

Ah, OK, when I searched the help file for "Export" it did indeed tell me how
to save a story as text. Thanks Mike.

valerie and danr have both volunteered to htmlize the handbook; I'll get you
both a copy and let you fight it out.
